The Light Blues will travel back to a raucous Ibrox next Thursday as they look to finish the job against the Polish giants, with Gerrard pretty pleased with what his side were able to earn tonight.
Speaking to RangersTV, Gerrard explained: “I think there a lot of things about the game we’re very pleased about. I thought we stuck together in very hostile atmosphere.
“We all stood up, we all backed ourselves, we all played and we all accepted it was a good game and gave a real, good account of ourselves.
“I thought in the second half, we lacked a bit of bravery. We were passing it well but with no real penetration.
“I think besides the Alfredo chance which was a real, top chance, and Niko’s half-chance off the header, I would have liked to have seen us create a little bit more in the second half.
“We’re going back to our place now so the atmosphere completely changes full-circle.
“I thought [in the first-half] we played a real, high-tempo with one and two touch football, and we were moving it really quick.
“I was really happy with our shape and everyone – there was nobody hiding out there. I thought it was a real, good game of football. I think you’ve got to give Legia credit for the part they played in it, and there wasn’t much in the game.
Rangers had many strong performances on the night, not least from Ryan Jack and Allan McGregor, with the manager continuing: “Do we not say that about them most weeks? I have been talking about Ryan Jack’s consistency for a long time and he loves a challenge and loves a big game.
“He is enjoying this stage and I think he is really enjoying playing in this system.
“We need to keep him in this form as long as we can. On nights like tonight when we’re playing against these teams that have got experience and are spending a lot of money, it’s only normal at times we are going to have to rely on Allan.
It’s sure to be some night at Ibrox next Thursday, and the manager went on to discuss what he expects from the second leg.
He said: “I would like to see us be a bit braver and a bit more positive in the final third. But, I am sure that will come.
“The majority of the time that we have been at Ibrox, we are brave in the final third and we do create chances.
“So if we can take our chances next week, I hope and expect us to score the goals that will be enough to get us through, but, because we haven’t got the away goal, it is important we defend very well as well.
“This game won’t be dead because of an away goal – we are going to need the fans to stay there with us right until the end and stay behind the team from start to finish and hopefully, that support can help us get over the line because, as I said before the game, it was always going to go to the wire because you had two teams that are good teams.”
