He was a captain since the early days, and he was a top leader. His shot-stopping too and as a human being around the place, he was brilliant. He was the pioneer for Burnley players getting into the England squad when we got promoted from the Championship into the Premier League.
Even before the World Cup I was saying he was the best in Britain. He is a top, top player and he got his plaudits from everyone during and after the World Cup. He put that one in against Croatia in the semi-final and I was absolutely delighted for him. He has an ability to pick a pass from anywhere on the pitch – he could play a striker in or he could wrap it into a central midfielder on the half-turn. He could get forward, he always had a trick in him and he is always going to score and create goals.
The best player I’ve ever played with – end of. It’s such a shame it was so early in my career and, at the time, I never realised just how good he was. If you speak to anyone who was associated with Falkirk or Rangers or Hibs when he was there, he would be in everyone’s team. He used to come out with change and cigarettes in his pockets to train – what a man and what a player!
The Buffalo Soldier! He surprised me how good he was. Watching him from afar I never realised how quick and how strong he is, and just how important he is to this team. He is absolutely clinical in front of goal.
