Nicola Docherty: Not Here To Make Up Numbers

NICOLA DOCHERTY insists Rangers aren’t in the Champions League to make up the numbers.

The Light Blues captain is gearing up to face English giants Arsenal in round one qualifying tomorrow night.

Docherty knows it will be a stern test for Jo Potter’s side - who have smashed home 43 goals in five matches this season - but she says they are up for the challenge.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, she said: “Arsenal know what happened to them last season when they lost to Paris FC, so they will be raring to go.

“We have a slight advantage after playing a few competitive games, we know it will be tough but the preparations have been excellent and we are ready to go.

“We are going into the game confident, in the Champions League, there are no easy games.

“We aren’t here to make up the numbers, we are here to challenge them and we plan to do that tomorrow.

“What we have done this season is we have added quality up top, it’s not just the strikers, goals are coming from all over the park.

“We suffered last season on missing out on the league on goal difference, we want to score more goals and we have done that this season.

“Rangers have a lot of history, we want to emulate what the men have done and we want to go as far as we can.

“We spoke last season and we want to challenge in the Champions League and not be happy just to make it - we want to compete.

“Jo knows Arsenal inside out and the detail in training has been excellent and we know our jobs.

“From the outside people will say Arsenal are the better team but we are ready to compete.”

Docherty has played in the competition before and knows it will be a step up in quality compared to the SWPL.

She insists boss Potter has the squad prepared but the players have to do the business on the park.

She added: “You want to play at the highest level and that is the Champions League.

“I have been lucky enough to play in it before and it is something we are excited to be back in again. If we win it will be up there with my career highlights.

“In the Champions League it is more demanding - we are facing quality players.

“No matter what tactics you do, you have to take responsibility on the pitch and that’s what we will do.

“Small margins make the difference in these games.

“As soon as you play in the Champions League, you have to be on it and that’s everyone on the park.”
