The Light Blues drew 0-0 with Aberdeen on Saturday in the Scottish Premiership which followed a 2-1 defeat at Hearts six days earlier – albeit a 2-0 win over Ross County was sandwiched in between.
The manager spoke of how pleased he’d been largely with the season prior to the trip to Tynecastle, and knows they need to get back to the form they showed prior to the winter break.
Speaking at this morning’s press conference, Gerrard said: “I think, in the main, we have been very consistent this year up until probably Hearts, I was extremely happy with the form, the hunger in the team and the ambition and the consistency they were showing.
“But that is the level we need to try and get back to – our European standard, winning at Celtic, winning at Easter Road, winning at Motherwell – where we went on a run with a real, tough block of fixtures away from home.
“The players know where we need to get to. I don’t think there’s too much wrong at the moment – I think there were certainly improvements against Aberdeen, but if we can just get our spark back in the final third, there is a performance brewing from us – I am confident of that.
“We debrief every game in different ways, and it depends on what we think is necessary at the time, so we have certainly looked back at the game as a staff and spoken to the players collectively and certain individuals within it.
“We realise we are not in our best form or the best moment – that’s the first thing we have got to do, but it’s very important we don’t listen to the outside noise as there is obviously emotions on the outside and people who are paid to give an opinion on the team and how we are playing.
“We respect and understand that, but for us, it’s important to stick together on the inside and keep doing what we do and keep believing in how we play and we will play through this period and get back to our very best quicker than people believe.
The manager also gave a team news update, adding: “James [Tavernier] has been a miss but he is available and a lot more ready than he was at the weekend.
“Alfredo is 90 minutes in and is available, and Greg Stewart is back now. Greg had a small chance at the weekend, but he would have been a risk with us only having one nine available, so we decided to wait until Hibs.
He was also asked about Ryan Jack and said: “He won’t be long, but he has no chance for Wednesday’s game.”
