The Light Blues were twice pegged back by Hibernian at Meadowbank Stadium in this afternoon’s quarter-final, but goals from Sarah Ewens, Jane Ross and a Rio Hardy double extended the side’s unbeaten run in all competitions this term.
Speaking to RangersTV after the victory, the Gers head coach commented: “We were a little bit frustrated at half-time.
“We didn’t quite show our quality in the first half, and caused a lot of our own problems, but we managed to tweak a few things and we saw an immediate difference when we came out for the second half.
“We can’t give teams a 45-minute start on us; we’re playing against a tough team and we can’t give them opportunities to score.
“I just told them to get the game back under control, to remain calm, and to bring our quality back as we couldn’t do too much without our basics there.
“It was more about getting back to basics, knowing our game plan, and executing it.
“It put us in such a tough position to fight back from, which we did, and credit to the players because we scored some excellent goals in the second half and fully deserved to go through.
“As much as I don’t think it was a 6-2 game, I’ll absolutely take it and we’re now into a semi-final.”
The second half appeared to pivot on a moment where Hibs ought to have taken the lead for the first time in the game when Vic Esson undersold a pass out of goal.
Instead, the New Zealand international made the subsequent stop, with Nicola Docherty’s clearance sailing all the way through to Sarah Ewens down the opposite end who made no mistake one-on-one with the Hibs goalkeeper.
Potter feels it was a defining moment in the contest, and she says the side’s focus will now shift immediately back to league action.
She added: “I think we were lucky not to concede at one end, then the quality of us going down the other end just to remain calm in that moment; the players have been excellent at that.
“We’ve done some work during the week about having those chances and moments, which we know playing against this team that we’ll always get one-on-ones, and Sarah has come up good and put us ahead.
“Going back to league action? It’s a good thing that we’re just straight back into the swing of things.
“Each game is tough, and week after week will be hard as we’re now entering the split, but these are the games that we want to be playing in.
“We’ve done excellent up until now, and, yes, we’re in a semi-final which we’re proud of, but it’s back to league action next week.”
