Potter: Squad Should Seize the Moment

JO Potter insists she can’t wait for her first taste of league action against Celtic.

The Rangers boss takes her unbeaten squad to Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium to face their rivals on Sunday lunchtime.

The Light Blues warmed up for the derby with a 7-0 thrashing of Hibs at Ibrox and Potter reckons it was the perfect warm-up for the top of the table clash.

She said: “We know it is going to be a tough game, but these are the games that you want to be a part of.

“It is down to our players to stand up and take that challenge on board and keep continuing to do what we have been doing.

“We have been progressing and working well on the training pitch, putting things into practice that we need to do to be better, to make our performances better and ultimately get three points.

“We were happy with the performance [against Hibs], we have gone through the post-match and there was a lot of really good moments from the game.

“There was stuff that I was really happy with, things that we have been working on for the past few weeks, overall I was happy with the performance and the three points.”

Rangers are two points behind this weekend’s opponents and earned the bragging rights with a 2-1 win in the Glasgow Cup final before the SWPL season got underway.

Potter knows it could come down to fine margins and challenged her players to seize their moment if it comes along.

Speaking exclusively to RangersTV, she added: “Can these games come down to fine margins? It can do.

“It is just momentum swings more than anything, knowing that if you can get your nose in front and stay attached to those teams with the points that are available.

“It is just going to make a really exciting season, you don't want Celtic to get too far ahead, and ultimately you want to get ahead of them, so you need to get your noses in front at some point.

“We know we need to go in and get a result to stay in touching distance but there is full confidence from that the team can do that.

“We know we can create opportunities; we need to be a little more clinical, you have got to tighten up and be better in your detail in possession as well as out of possession.

“Whichever game we go into, no matter who we are playing, we still look at the threats of the opposition, we have looked at that and made sure we have worked on it on the training pitch.

“But as ever I think there is a lot of things we can exploit against Celtic and we will be looking to do that.”

Potter was delighted to see six of her players selected for Scotland’s double header with the Netherlands later this month and was thrilled with Kathy Hill and Kirsty Howat’s inclusions.

She said: “You see the work rate and the performances that these players put on, I am particularly happy to see Kathy and Kirsty in the squad, they have both been brilliant.

“You see the goals that Kirsty scored on Sunday, which goes to show the work that we have been doing on the training ground.

“Kathy's game has just been getting better and better week in week out, she has been a real leader at the back for us both in and out of possession, I am more than pleased to see them two added to the squad.”
