Propper Praises Tavernier Ahead of 500th Rangers Appearance

ROBIN Propper has praised James Tavernier as the captain gets set to play his 500th game for Rangers.

The Ibrox skipper - if selected - will reach the milestone in the Premiership clash at home to Motherwell tomorrow.

Propper partnered Tavernier at centre-half at times this season, including in Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Kilmarnock, and the Dutch defender has been impressed by his skipper on and off the park.

Speaking to the media, he said: “Tav brings a lot to the dressing room.

“He does a lot on the pitch, in the dressing room, he is open-minded and a real captain. I can learn from him as can the young guys.

“He leads by example and he wants the best for the team. He speaks to all the players, he is someone who talks to all the staff about things and then again to the players.

“He is experienced enough to play in different positions. For me, I go to the left but we talk and help each other in the game, so he is good at adapting to different positions.

“I have played with a few partners and they all have a lot of qualities. I enjoy playing with all of them.”

Tomorrow sees Hall of Famer and former captain Barry Ferguson lead the team for the first time as head coach at home since replacing Philippe Clement.

Propper knows he is now working under an Ibrox icon and has been impressed so far with Ferguson and his coaching team.

The Light Blues have lost their last two games at home, to Queen’s Park and St Mirren, with Propper determined to give the supporters a winning display.

He added: “The gaffer won a lot of trophies here. He is a Rangers legend for the fans, so I knew a few things about him.

“It was disappointing that Philippe lost his job but that is football. We were all in it, it was disappointing the results weren’t there.

“We have a new manager, he has made some small changes as he has his own ideas and we are trying to do the best we can.

“The gaffer wants to play fast football and press teams. There are some differences and we play with energy.

They follow us in big numbers and we want to make them, and ourselves proud. We always go for the win.

“It has only been one game so we have to do it consistently, but we can take confidence from Kilmarnock.”
