Goals from Dado Prso, Libor Sionko and Barry Ferguson earned Paul Le Guen’s side all three points in what proved to be a one-sided encounter with the boys in Light Blue dominating from start to finish.
Le Gaffer made two changes to the side that lost to Falkirk last weekend with Sionko coming in for the injured Kris Boyd and Stevie Smith replacing Sasa Papac.
In-form Hibs, who had not lost with John Collins in charge before today’s fixture, started the match in a confident fashion but neither team were able to create any clear cut chances in the opening ten minutes.
Referee Iain Brines did, however, have to book Hibs captain Kevin Thomson for a late challenge on Charlie Adams after the midfielder had shot at goal from 25 yards.
The Rangers supporters were vocal in support of their team in the opening stages and they were off their seats on 14 minutes when Ferguson chipped the ball over the defence to Prso.
The Croatian hitman controlled the ball on his chest before firing the ball into the back of the net but he was adjudged to be offside.
This should been a warning sign for the Easter Road side but they were again caught napping when Dado opened the scoring only a minute later.
Libor Sionko, who was lively throughout, broke down a Hibs attack before feeding the ball to Nacho Novo.
The Spaniard looked up before finding his strike partner in the box and he made no mistake with his low finish beyond Malkowski.
In the following celebrations Barry Ferguson and Sproule were seen having a heated argument and the referee had to issue yellow cards to both players after they had been seperated.
This added a bit more spice to what was already proving to be an explosive match and Rangers confidence grew as the half progressed.
Collins was clearly concerned on the touchline at his side’s poor defending and Novo should have doubled his side on 22 minutes. Prso neatly headed the ball into the path of his teammate who proceeded to blast the ball over the bar with his left-foot from six yards.
It was proving to be one-way traffic for the Light Blues and they made it 2-0 on 31 minutes.
Adam picked the ball up on the left and his his teasing cross was missed by Novo but Sionko was there to smash it home from eight yards.
Hibs defending for the goal was nothing short of shambolic and it was to get worse.
On 30 minutes Prso should have made it three when he received a pass from Ferguson but after beating Shelton Martis twice his shot lacked power and was easily gathered by the Hibs keeper.
In what was proving to be a remarkable first-half, Rangers then scored another five minutes later.
Novo found space on the right-wing and played a delightful chip to Barry Ferguson who had darted into the 18-yard box.
The captain, like the Rangers fans, must have been stunned to be totally unmarked but his glancing header over Malkowski was exquisite.
The Ibrox faithful were in ecstasy as their side trampled over a Hibs team that would have travelled to Glasgow with high hopes of getting a win.
The Leith side, however, showed nothing in the first-half but with only three minutes remaining they could have pulled a goal back.
Sproule received the ball on the right and when he cut the ball back Chris Killen pulled his effort wide from only three yards with McGregor beaten. .
Collins made two substitutions at half-time with Abdessalam Benjelloun replacing Beuzelin and Michael Stewart going on for Killen.
And Hibs, as expected, came out fighting after the restart but the Gers, with Ferguson in inspirational form, held on to their lead with Allan McGregor having little to do up until the hour mark.
The Hibs players were starting to show a bit of frustration and Sproule, so often a threat against Rangers, was given a red card on 66 minutes for throwing the ball of the turf in anger after the referee had awarded a dubious throw-in in Rangers favour.
With Hibs trying to regroup, the home side pushed straight up the pitch and Prso was unlucky when he was denied twice by Malkowski from close range.
Le Guen elected to make his first change of the game when he replaced Prso with Sebo on 76 minutes and the Croatian fully deserved the applause he recieved from the Gers’ supporters after a tireless performance.
Sebo could have got himself on the scoresheet after being on the field for only a minute when he was sent clear but his shot was straight at Malkowski.
The Slovakian international then had another opportunity four minutes later when Smith played him in with a terrific pass behind the Hibs defenders but again his shot lacked the power to beat the goalie.
With time ticking away both Gavin Rae and Thomas Buffel were given a run-out and the latter managed to get himself booked with only five minutes remaining for diving in the box after a mazy run had taken him past three defenders.
The second-half was never going to live up to the first and Rangers had already done enough before half-time to seal a much-needed win.
Getting three points was all that mattered and Le Guen will have been pleased with the way his team bounced back from last weekend’s disappointing defeat at the Falkirk Stadium.
