Rangers 3-0 Motherwell

PETER LOVENKRANDS could certainly have made a better case for an extended Rangers contract but he ensured that the Light Blues maintained their 100 per cent Ibrox record with his first goal in four games.

He headed the second goal 18 minutes from time to make the points safe and then created the third for Ronald de Boer in the final moments to make it five wins and no goals conceded for Rangers on home soil.

It was frustrating in periods as Motherwell had 10 men behind the ball a lot of the time but Rangers eventually produced the scoreline they deserved.

Mikel Arteta was top man once again, displaying great movement and vision in the packed midfield area and Alex McLeish was naturally pleased with a decent day’s work.

Rangers could scarcely have hoped for a better start as they scorched into the lead after only two minutes and the Ibrox crowd anticipated a rout.

Mikel Arteta played a low cross into the box, Claudio Caniggia helped the ball on and Lorenzo Amoruso, who had stayed up following a corner, angled his body to drive a right foot shot into the right corner.

A minute later, Amoruso nearly scored again when he connected with Arteta’s corner from the right but his header flew just over the crossabar and at that moment former Ibrox captain Terry Butcher must have feared the worst.

His young side was in danger of being swamped and they were lucky to survive in seven minutes when Fernando Ricksen played a good ball into the box for Peter Lovenkrands who turned onto his left foot but his shot was deflected by David Partridge for a corner.

However, his worst fears were not realised as Well managed to force their way back into the game and most certainly did their best to contatin Rangers who found it increasingly hard to break them down.

In saying that, Arteta looked to have found a way through when Lovenkrands him out following an electric burst from the halfway line but the young Spaniard delayed his shot and Corrigan was able to deflect it wide.

Five minutes later it was only bad fortune which prevented Rangers from going two ahead. Arteta played in Maurice Ross with a superb pass inside Steven Hammell and Motherwell were in real trouble.

They managed to clear Ross’s cross but only as far as Arteta who skillfully moved the ball onto his left foot and hammered a low shot which seem destined for the left corner but struck the base of the post and Well survived.

It was fast becoming an afternoon of frustration and it was very nearly even worse when Motherwell won a freekick 30 yards out in the left side of the Rangers box.

Hammell whipped over a terrific ball and Corrigan got in a header but Stefan Klos made an excellent block. He may not have known much about it but, as usual, he was in the right place.

Rangers needed some inspiration and they certainly looked more menacing in the early moments of the second half, injecting more urgency into their play in the last third.

Motherwell were in trouble in 55 minutes when they were sliced open by an excellent Rangers passing movement. Moore started it with a threaded pass for de Boer, he flicked it back for Ricksen who, in turn, picked out Caniggia in the inside right channel.

The veteran Argentinian shaped to his right and was just about to shoot when he was felled by Corrigan right on the edge of the box. Sadly, Arteta rather wasted the set piece by firing a shot straight at the wall.

Corrigan nearly miskicked Lovenkrands’ cross into his own net in 57 minutes then Stevie Woods made a good save from Amoruso’s header a minute later following Arteta’s corner.

And then the adventurous Italian drove a 30-yard shot only a couple of feet wide after skipper Barry Ferguson had intelligently played the ball to him from a wide area.

Still the second goal would not come for Rangers and Alex McLeish opted to introduce Michael Mols with 20 minutes remaining who again received a rapturous welcome from the Ibrox fans.

And within two minutes it finally came, almost inevitably inspired by Arteta whose artistry on the ball was a joy to watch at times.

De Boer played a short free kick to the Spaniard who moved one way then the other before producing an excellent cross to penaly spot where Lovenkrands superbly angled a header into the left corner of the net.

There was never any real danger that Motherwell would come back after that and Partrdige only made things worse them in 76 minutes when he was sent off for an over the top lunge on Ricksen.

Rangers, however, were not finished and neither was Lovenkrands. He twisted his way into the box in injury time and fired a low shot which Woods could not hold and de Boer simply followed up to stroke the rebound into the empty net.

It produced a more reflective scoreline and, of course, allowed Rangers to open up a four-point lead even it is only for a short period.
