Both strikers scored twice, with Prso hitting his goals inside the final minute, and that was the ideal present for manager Alex McLeish who celebrated his 47th birthday.
With Nacho Novo also returning to the action, the striking options are many and varied for McLeish who now takes his troops to Inverness on Sunday before a massive series of games in February when the season can be shaped.
It was a thoroughly deserved win although there was a shaky period in the middle which caused the manager some consternation.
The key man was Thomas Buffel, whose industry was as impressive as his creativity.
Achieving the early breakthrough is always key when taking on opponents who are intent on playing a containing game and Rangers did exactly that.
Kris Boyd gave the Ibrox men lead after seven minutes and Alex McLeish must have felt it was going to be a comfortable day at the office.
It was the purpose of Peter Lovenkrands which led to the opening. The Danish striker burst in from the right side and hammered a left foot shot which hit Harald Pinxten and broke to Boyd.
The former Kilmarnock man seized the opportunity and drilled a right foot shot past Roddy McKenzie.
Lovenkrands might have scored four minutes before this when Buffel picked him out after great work on the left but the Dane shot straight at McKenzie.
Rangers’ top scorer had another good chance in 10 minutes when Burke cleverly played him in but again he shot at the Livi keeper.
Buffel seems to be a different player when he struts his stuff on home soil and he was at the heart of everything positive that Rangers did.
The little Belgian showed tremendous spirit and endeavour in 15 minutes to win the ball from Dave Mackay near the corner flag on the left side then burst inside to set up Lovenkrands.
It was another great chance for the Dane. Sadly it was another miss as he pulled his shot wide of the right hand post.
Rangers were totally in control and Buffel was almost in when Ian Murray played him in after 21 minutes but his shot was blocked.
A minute later the former Feyenoord star nearly caught out McKenzie with a cute chip but the Livi keeper was alert enough to make the save.
It was clearly a source of frustration to McLeish that the sheer dominance had not been turned into goals.
And then he had to change the side just before half-time when Soto Kyrgiakos indicated a problem. Stevie Smith came on to play left back while Murray moved into centre back.
For some reason Rangers seemed lethargic in the opening moments of the second half and Livi grabbed an unexpected equaliser.
Marvin Andrews was beaten to the ball by striker Steven Hislop who connected with Richard Brittain’s cross from the right.
Hungarian midfielder Gabor Vincze gambled that the ball would break his way and he gleefully fired a right foot shot past the stranded Waterreus.
This was clearly not in the script but Rangers managed to restore order when they roared back into the lead five minutes later.
It was another sweet moment for Boyd who claimed his fifth goal in two Ibrox appearances since joining from Kilmarnock.
Chris Burke was the architect, moving the ball to the edge of the box where Buffel flicked it on and Boyd took one touch before lashing a right foot shot into the left corner.
That eased the nerves a bit for birthday boy McLeish and Rangers were back into their stride after a stuttering start.
The manager then introduced Dado Prso, who replaced Lovenkrands who had only trained one day in the previous week but was nevertheless disappointed that he was unable to maintain his scoring run.
Prso still looked a bit rusty but he showed his striking prowess in the final moments of the game to give Rangers a more emphatic margin of victory which they probably deserved, taking the game in its entirety.
The talismanic Croatian struck twice in the final minute of the match and both goals were great strikes.
He won a freekick just outside the box after being felled by Greg Strong and elected to hit the dead ball himself, blasting an unstoppable shot past McKenzie.
Then, in injury time he latched onto Nacho Novo’s clever flick-on from Ferguson’s pass to drill a right foot shot into the left corner.
It was a clear indication that big Dado was back and with a series of major tests coming up for Rangers his double could hardly have been more timely.
