Well from a wide left position Arveladze at least matched the Dutchman’s effort as he and Thomas Buffel were star performers at Ibrox with two goals apiece against Motherwell in the 4-1 win.
There was a real expectation from the Light Blue faithful ahead of this clash – particularly with Motherwell’s central pairing of David Partridge and Steven Craigan both missing through suspension – and they weren’t disappointed.
Nacho Novo, still playing on the right, put in a tremendous performance and could find himself in that position permanently if he continues to make such an impact.
He looked hungry from the start and in the fourth minute crossed for Prso. Martin Corrigan slipped allowing the Croatian a clear shot at goal but Gordon Marshall matched his effort with an easy save.
Motherwell looked reasonably composed in the opening spell but Rangers continued to put pressure on their make-shift defence.
Once again Novo was the provider and when his cross bypassed everyone in the box, Arveladze was at the back post for a free header, although he could only direct it onto the roof of the net.
The supporters didn’t have to wait long for the opener, however and two minutes later the brilliant Thomas Buffel scored his fourth goal of the season.
The Belgian international latched on to Prso’s headflick and charged towards goal, showing an impressive turn of pace.
Corrigan tried to block on the edge of the box, actually fouling Buffel, but he regained his balance and composure to fire the ball low past Marshall.
It was a fine strike and the move was a glimpse of the former Feyenoord star at his best.
Motherwell offered very little up front at this stage and five minutes later the Light Blues doubled their advantage when Arveladze started and finished the move himself.
The Georgian hit a fine shot from the edge of the box which Marshall spilled, but instead of pushing it wide of the post the Well keeper only managed to find Prso on the byline.
As unselfish as ever the Croatian then showed good skill to out smart Paul Quinn and cross for Arveladze who bundled the ball home.
The former Ajax striker is leaving at the end of the campaign and saluted each stand as part of his celebration.
Terry Butcher’s squad is so ravaged by injuries that he could only name five substitutes this afternoon, but his side almost snatched a goal back following some slack Gers defending.
Ronald Waterreus, who had been untroubled until now, sliced a back pass straight to Scott McDonald and the young Aussie drilled a low ball across the Rangers box.
Thankfully for the home side David Clarkston failed to connect on the penalty spot and then Ritchie Foran miss-controlled at the back post conceding a goal kick.
It was a let off for Gers as they were in total control otherwise.
Just after the half hour mark Prso played in Buffel again and his lob over Marshall was certain to make it 3-0 had Paul Quinn not cleared on the line.
Prso then beat Well’s offside trap to lob Marshall again, but his effort was just too high.
Terry Butcher was clearly dissatisfied with his team’s inability to contain Rangers and barked orders from his technical area.
The tactical changes almost paid off in the 50th minute when David Clarkston had a chance to ease his side’s woes after collecting Marvin Andrew’s sliced clearance.
The youngster broke clean through on goal but Waterreus did well to save with his feet.
That was the only real opportunity for Well before Rangers stepped up a gear.
On 56 minutes Arveladze made it 3-0 when he slid in to direct Novo’s low cross past Marshall.
Then three minutes later Thomas Buffel grabbed his second after some good build up play from Gers in the box.
Novo and Arveladze linked well before playing in Prso, but as he had his back to goal the Croatian coolly slid the ball back Buffel, who smashed his low drive into the net.
The Light Blues squandered several excellent chances to enhance their lead and in the 88th minute Marvin Andrews was unfortunate to turn Shaun Fagan’s cross into his own net.
It’s a shame that was the final action of any note to detract from an otherwise impressive Rangers display.
