Rangers Academy International Review

RANGERS Academy have had a number of players who represented their nations across the last seven days on international duty.

Here is a roundup of who was involved and how they got on:

Bailey Rice and Leyton Grant – Scotland Under-19s

Scotland Under-19s 2-0 Azerbaijan Under-19s – Friendly

Scotland Under-19s 5-3 Faroe Islands Under-19s - Friendly

Netherlands Under-19s 2-2 Scotland Under-19s – Friendly

The Gers duo were part of the young Scots squad for their friendly triple header out in Spain over the most recent break.

Leyton was named in the starting side for their first clash as they took on Azerbaijan, as he wore the captain’s armband and helped his nation to a clean sheet in a 2-0 win at the Pinatar Arena.

Midfielder Rice was then given the honour of leading his side out as they took on the Faroe Islands two days later, with Neil McFarlane’s men on the right end of an eight-goal thriller as they claimed a 5-3 success in their second match in as many days.

The pair were then both named in the starting lineup in the final match of the camp as they took on the Netherlands, they played out an entertaining 2-2 with the Dutch to round off a positive break in the head coach’s first time taking charge of the group.

Mason Munn and Blaine McClure – Northern Ireland Under-19s

Norway Under-19s 2-0 Northern Ireland Under-19s – Friendly

Sweden Under-19s 2-0 Northern Ireland Under-19s - Friendly

Mason and Blaine were both part of Gareth McAuley’s young Northern Ireland squad in the most recent camp as they contested a pair of friendly matches.

They were beaten 2-0 on both occasions, with Munn captaining the squad between the posts in the outings and his Gers teammates firstly featuring as a substitute before earning a start in the second game three days later.

The pair have been a regular in the B team this season, as they will look to take their experience of competing moving forward having also contested the UEFA Under-19s European Championships in which their nation hosted earlier this summer.

Josh Gentles – Wales Under-18s

Slovakia Under-18s 2-3 Wales Under-18s - Jezek Cup

Wales Under-18s 1-2 Turkiye Under-18s – Jezek Cup

Josh was part of the Wales Under-18s squad that competed in the Jezek Cup in the Czech Republic over the last week.

The young forward started on the bench as they played out a goalless draw against the tournament hosts in their opening game, before being named in the starting lineup as his nation completed an impressive second half turnaround as they came from behind to win 3-2 against Slovakia.

The Welsh then rounded off the youth cup competition with a 2-1 defeat to Turkey as the youngster was again involved with the squad, as he will hope to bring his experience of the break into the Gers youth ranks this season.

Alex Smith – USA Under-17s

USA Under-17s 0-1 Germany Under-17s – Jezek Cup

Czech Republic Under-17s 0-4 USA Under-17s – Jezek Cup

Slovakia Under-17s 1-1 USA Under-17s – Jezek Cup

Alex was also involved in the Jezek Cup as the young US squad warmed up for next year’s Concacaf Under-17 Championship.

His side began the tournament with a narrow defeat to Germany before producing a commanding display against the hosts two days later, running out 4-0 winners with the youngster making his debut for his nation at that age group during the break.

They rounded off their cup outings with a score draw against Slovakia with Alex now joining back up with the Gers academy having signed full-time this summer in which he has been involved regularly for Steven Smith’s Under-18s side.
