A header from Michael Travis followed by a Lewis Baker penalty put the home side two goals in front at the break. Liam Buchanan wrapped up the contest in the second half with a well-taken finish as the hosts claimed all three points.
David McCallum named one change to the side that beat Tranent Juniors 2-0 last weekend with Kelsey Ewen coming in at right-back to replace Jack Harkness.
Rangers started on the front foot in Berwick.Ewen picked up the ball in a promising position down the right flank, looking for Robbie Ure in the area his cross caused problems for the backline of the home side, but they managed to clear the early danger.
The home side’s first effort of the contest came on the 10-minute mark, Lewis Barr getting on the end of a free kick delivery but his flicked header looped over Lewis Budinauckas’ crossbar as both sides settled into the match in the opening stages.The Gers went closest to breaking the deadlock through Ross McCausland.
Robbing the last defender the forward did well to win the footrace as he worked the ball onto his left side. His shot looked to have beaten Calum Antell in the Berwick goal but it came back off the post which allowed the covering David Ferguson to make a challenge and clear the danger.
From the resulting corner, Charlie Lindsay’s delivery broke to defender Connor Allan round the back post but he could only fire wide at the angle as the Light Blues looked to put their stamp on proceedings and make the breakthrough.
Mackenzie Strachan picked out a clever run in-behind by James Graham who took the lofted pass in his stride, but he dragged his left footed effort wide as Rangers were starting to look comfortable in possession through midfield.
Jamie Stevenson fired a long range effort wide of the post as Berwick looked to go ahead themselves in what remained a goalless opening half hour at Shielfield Park.
A half chance from outside the area was created by Ure as he played in the midfield runner in Charlie Lindsay. Looking for his third goal in as many games his effort flew wide of the post as the game lacked any real cutting edge from either side.
Berwick Rangers took the lead in the contest 10 minutes before the break. A dangerous free kick was swung in from the right flank by Jordan Sinclair, the in-swinging delivery was met by Michael Travis at the near post who headed home to put the hosts ahead.
The hosts had a chance to double their advantage, the referee deeming Connor Allan’s challenge inside the area on Liam Buchanan enough to point to the penalty spot. Lewis Baker stepped up from 12 yards and fired the ball into the bottom left hand corner as Stuart Malcolm’s men went in at half time two goals to the good.
Rangers looked to make a fast start and get the next goal in the contest to try find themselves a way back into the match. Arron Lyall was getting heavily involved at the start of the second half, picking up the ball in dangerous areas as he looked to be the provider to half the deficit.
Berwick almost added a third just over 10 minutes into the second half, Baker played a ball across to the far post with Graham Taylor arriving round the back but his effort on the slide was diverted behind by Lewis MacKinnon at the angle.
Substitute Connor Young went close for the Gers with a left footed free kick just over 20-yards out, but his strike was pushed away by Antell in the Berwick goal as the away side looked for a way back into the game with 25 minutes remaining.
Berwick scrambled to keep their two goal lead intact, after some quick footwork from Lyall on the right flank, the ball broke for Ure inside the area but the home side put bodies on the line to make the initial block, the ricochet broke for captain Robbie Fraser but he could only send his right footed effort over the top.
Liam Buchanan added a third for the home side with just over 15 minutes to go - a ball down the outside was met by the striker as he latched onto the pass and fired a shot across goal as it found the far corner to wrap up the game for the home side.
Rangers looked for a consolation goal towards the end of the contest to no avail as they endured a disappointing afternoon in Berwick as their run of league wins came to an end. The Gers take on Clyde in the Glasgow Cup on Tuesday night next.
