There was no shortage of opportunities for the Light Blues throughout the 90 minutes, but they were unable to breach the Hearts goal as they dropped points in the league for only the third time this season.
Malky Thomson named five changes to his side for the trip to Edinburgh, with Jenna Fife, Tessel Middag, Chelsea Cornet, Sam Kerr and Brogan Hay returning to the starting lineup from last weekend’s Scottish Cup victory over Stirling University.
It was a fast-paced start at the Oriam, with the Gers going close to opening the scoring inside three minutes. Lizzie Arnot showed a superb fleet of foot to drive down the left and centre towards Kirsty Howat, whose flick towards goal was blocked out for a corner by Vyan Sampson.
Arnot was among the action again moments later, ghosting in at the far post as Rachel McLauchlan centred from the right with a low, driven delivery.
After surviving a few hairy moments, the home side began to establish a foothold in the game. A quick free-kick sent Georgia Timms through on goal but the Hearts forward had her effort denied by Fife.
There was a brief stoppage in play on 26 minutes as Colette Cavanagh and Emma Brownlie clashed while competing for a header, but both were able to continue.
Hearts threatened just two minutes later as Timms was released in-behind before pulling the back towards Erin Rennie in the penalty area, but Fife was down quickly to collect the midfielder’s effort.
Chances were at a premium for the Light Blues in the first half, typified by McLauchlan’s effort from a narrow angle which drew a comfortable save from Charlotte Parker-Smith.
However, the Gers came within a whisker of breaking the deadlock seven minutes shy of the interval. A loose ball on the right-hand side broke to Kirsty Howat who sent a hopeful cross towards Arnot lurking at the back post, with Brownlie almost diverting a defensive header into her own net.
Howat then looked certain to score on the stroke of half-time. Arnot’s cross found its way to the forward at the far post, whose effort squirmed under Parker-Smith and Sampson was on hand to clear the ball off the goal line.
The Light Blues emerged for the second period with a renewed intent. Hay’s cross from an advanced position on the right was met on the first-time volley from Middag, but her goalbound effort was blocked en route.
From the same phase of play, Hay once again delivered a dangerous cross into a congested penalty area, falling on this occasion to Howat whose strike was diverted away from danger.
Rangers were successfully pinning Hearts into their own defensive third, but Kathryn Hill was forced into a defensive sliding challenge when Monica Forsyth released Gwen Davies with a clipped pass over the Gers defence.
Thomson turned to his substitutes bench on the hour-mark, reshuffling his pack by moving Middag into midfield and introducing Hannah Davison for Kirsty MacLean.
The substitute was immediately involved in the action, firing over after collecting a loose ball from a corner after Hill had went close to connecting with a header.
Sam Kerr turned an effort over the crossbar as the game ticked towards its final 20 minutes after promising work from Hay and Middag on the right-hand side.
There was another strong chance for Rangers moments later as they caught Hearts on the counter-attack. Howat was fed in-behind for a one-on-one opportunity, but her poked finish was thwarted by Parker-Smith as the away side’s search for an opener continued.
Indeed, it very nearly arrived on 77 minutes after terrific persistence by Hay on the right-hand side. She picked out Kerr on the edge of the penalty area but the midfielder could only steer her effort off target.
The irrepressible Hay was among the action again less than 90 seconds later, standing up a cross that clipped the crossbar and went behind for a goal kick.
The final roll of the dice from Thomson was in the form of Emma Watson as she replaced Chelsea Cornet, but a winning goal from the Gers proved elusive as the game ended all square in Edinburgh.
