The rangy Hibs midfielder again fired wide, while Reid was equal to an inswinging free-kick.
However, it was the Gers who cracked open the contest on the stroke of half-time despite the numerical disadvantage when a free-kick delivery from Alexander Smith sailed through a crowd of bodies and was touched home by Hynd from close-range.
You certainly couldn’t doubt the willingness and application from the ten-man visitors, with Reid equal at the second attempt to Arran McSporran’s dipping effort from range on the hour-mark.
Prior to that Cole Shankland dragged wide from the right-hand side.
It was disappointing, then, that the home side found the leveller on a quick break forward when Cleland raced forward before working the ball onto his right side and planting an unstoppable finish into the top corner.
The introduction of James Reid facilitated a move to a back three as the Gers looked to drag the contest out against the 11 men of Hibs.
Kyle Glasgow was the result of a few meaty challenges as Bruce went into the book for a late challenge in an attempt to break up a Gers counter-attack.
McMurdo wrapped wide on the edge of the penalty area before he sent in a delicious cross that Conor Owen nodded away impressively.
The game bounced from one end to the other as Ben Hutton linked with Glasgow but saw his pull-back intercepted at the near post.
In the blink of an eye the hosts raced down the opposite end as MacDonald lifted his head to pick out Shankland in space who buried a finish beyond the outstretched Reid.
The game was put beyond doubt in stoppage time when Cleland played a give-and-go on the edge of the penalty area before dispatching beyond Reid.
