The damage was inflicted in a rampant first-half showing as Callum Burnside’s brace was added to by a Jack Wyllie header.
It means the Gers have done the double over the Lanarkshire outfit in the group phase of the competition, mirroring their 3-0 win at the Rangers Training Centre in December, as they showed a strong response to last week’s defeat at Hibernian.
The starting lineup was headlined by a return to action for Aiden McCallion, making his first start since November after being forced off injured in KDM Evolution Trophy action against Hamilton Academical.
The Gers began on the front foot as Alexander Smith, lining up provisionally through the middle of the attack, tried his luck from distance but watched his effort deflect into the grateful arms of the Motherwell goalkeeper.
The 17-year-old then floated in a delightful free-kick to the back stick in which Wyllie, restored to the team from last week’s defeat at Hibernian, met and looped a header onto the roof of the net, albeit the offside flag on the nearside was swiftly raised.
It mattered little, however, as the away side broke the deadlock inside 20 minutes.
The merits of the fluid attacking trio were evident when Burnside, making an out-to-in run across the backline, met Zebedee Lawson’s reverse pass, profiting from a fortuitous ricochet off the Motherwell defender before steadying himself inside the penalty area and planting an unerring finish into the bottom corner.
Rangers could have doubled their lead two minutes later to really capitalise on their momentum when Conor Owen met Smith’s corner at the far post, but his header drifted wide of the target from close-range.
Wyllie then arrowed wide from the edge of the penalty area after a corner was cleared only as far as the defender, before Lawson struck venomously into the side netting.
There was no disputing Rangers’ superiority in the contest, and they soon doubled their advantage when Lawson’s low free-kick was palmed out only as far as Burnside …
Two became three just a few minutes later when promising persistence from Lyle Wark won a corne,r and Smith’s tantalising floated delivery was met by Wyllie, towering above everyone in the penalty area, who powered a header beyond the goalkeeper.
Sam Reid had been a spectator for much of the opening period, but he was thrust into action on the stroke of the interval when Arran Clark was released through on goal, and he produced a terrific diving stop down to his left to deny the winger.
A dangerous inswinging delivery from Aiden Crilly was almost met by Burnside, seeking his third, before the midfielder stole possession high moments later, but curled a tame finish straight down the throat of the Motherwell goalkeeper.
Lawson looked to extend his side’s lead when he skipped through a succession of challenges and unleashed a rasping effort which was palmed away to safety.
Minutes later, Burnside showed promise down the left-hand side before laying the ball into the path of Wark, who shot off target.
The away side were hungry to add to their advantage and nearly did so when Smith demonstrated his impressive footwork in receiving from Lawson’s pass before being denied at the near post by the Motherwell goalkeeper.
Owen was then unfortunate not to nod home from a corner, while Ben Hutton lifted over the crossbar from a Smith pull-back on the break.
Substitute Ruaridh Hall came close to adding a fourth late on as the young Gers closed out a second victory in their group stage campaign.
