Robbie Ure put the Light Blues ahead after reacting first to a shot that rebounded off the post to give the Gers the lead on the night before they were pegged back by Kyle Semple’s second half strike.
The away side went ahead for a second time on the night through Zak Lovelace’s left-footed shot ten minutes from time before the young Gers were denied victory through Finlay Malcolm’s stoppage time header for the hosts as the game ended a point apiece.
David McCallum made three changes to his Rangers team from their City of Glasgow Cup victory over Partick Thistle two weeks prior, with Lewis Budinauckas, Connor Allan and Robbie Ure coming into the side.
Rangers started brightly in Cumbernauld, with Zak Lovelace releasing Jack Harkness down the right side, however his cross was unable to find Ure who was lurking at the back post.
Moments later Arron Lyall who was operating on the right of the front three, was found on the right side and his dangerous cross was well turned behind by Broomhill captain Kirk Broadfoot and behind for a corner.
The home side started enjoying a spell of possession just short of the 15-minute mark, James Grant found himself in space down the right but his delivery was well claimed by Lewis Budinauckas in the Gers goal.
Rangers went closest to opening the scoring two minutes later, captain Robbie Fraser found Lovelace in the box, but his glancing header went just wide.
The Light Blues found took the lead on the night in the next phase of play, midfielder Connor Allan found space inside the penalty area, his right-footed shot deflecting against the post and Robbie Ure was closest as he reacted to turn the ball into the empty net as the visitors went ahead.
Arron Lyall went close to doubling the lead for McCallum’s side, picking up the ball in the inside right flank, the Gers’ number 11 produced an exquisite stepover before for a right-footed shot goal wards and forced a good save from David Wilson to tip it over the bar.
Rangers were somehow denied a first half penalty on the 27th minute mark as Lovelace appeared to be tripped inside the area as he was about to fire a shot at goal, but the referee waved play on.
Lyall was once again heavily involved as he swapped wings for the time being, he used his pace to his advantage driving past the full back and again was denied by a good stop from the Broomhill goalkeeper, as the Light Blues probed for a second goal on the night.
The hosts went close to an equaliser at the start of the second half, Pat Moy getting on the end of a corner but his close-range header was comfortably dealt with by Budinauckas who held.
Broomhill were posing more of a threat as they game approached the hour mark, but the Rangers back four were remaining strong as they looked to preserve a clean sheet and maintain their one goal advantage.
Mathew McDonald went the closest the hosts had gone to an equaliser, latching onto a loose ball inside the area he fired a low shot but it was kept out by the Rangers shot stopper with his legs as he dived to his left side to make the stop.
The home side got themselves back on level terms, Kyle Semple firing a left-footed shot on the half volley from the edge of the area which was well struck as it found the far corner to level up the match in Cumbernauld.
Rangers went agonisingly close to going back in front with just over 15 minutes left of the contest to play. Lovelace picked up the ball on the near touchline after some initial good work by Lyall, improvising well he found striker Ure with a back heel but his close-range effort was denied well the covering Broomhill bodies who made blocks on two separate occasions.
Ure went close again after being found by Bailey Rice with a pass to feet, spinning in behind Broadfoot he did well to work the space but fired his right-footed shot wide as the game headed towards the final ten minutes.
The Light Blues went back in front with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. Lovelace who had been a constant threat on the night with his pace, he brilliantly to burst down the left side as he fired a shot across goal to fire the Gers back in front.
Harkness was denied a third from close range seven minutes from time after a good interchange down the right flank, but his shot was kept out by Wilson again with his feet.
However, in the final minute of stoppage time the hosts found their way back into the game for a second time through Finlay Malcolm’s close-range header as the match ended a point a piece as the Gers were denied victory right at the end.
