In a match of a very few clear-cut opportunities, the Gers were left frustrated as their winning league run came to an end an in a strong defensive showing from the hosts with the matching ending 0-0.
Head coach Jo Potter named two changes to the side from the midweek win over Hearts, with Mia McAulay and Sarah Ewens coming into the team.
A free-kick opportunity presented itself to the away side within the opening two minutes after a foul on Rachel Rowe. After a dummy from Tessel Middag the Wales international tried her luck as Kathy Hill looked to turn the ball goalwards at the far post, but the effort was wide of the target.
Liv McLoughlin tried her luck from range to register the effort on target. The midfielder was sharp as she intercepted the ball high up the pitch, after riding the challenge of two Thistle players her shot was powerful but central as it was calmly held by Ava Easdon.
The Gers were continuing to ramp up the early pressure at Petershill. A corner kick routine was played to the edge of the area by Rowe. Winger Lizzie Arnot was alert as she got on the end of the pass and tried a shot, but it was turned round the post by the Jags shot stopper.
The hosts had their first chance of the match as they almost made the most of a set piece opportunity. Linzi Taylor sent a cross into the box from a wide angle before it broke to the edge of the area for Demi Falconer. The centre-back caught a shot well but it flew just over Jenna Fife’s crossbar.
Partick Thistle thought they had taken in the lead in the contest only for the referee to end their celebrations prematurely. McLoughlin was caught late inside her own area before Emma Lawton smashed the ball into the net, but the man in the middle blew for the foul for the away side.
Another close call this time for the hosts was to come just minutes later. Good combination play on the left flank involving Arnot and Jane Ross saw the winger set free in behind the backline.
Her delivery was almost met by Sarah Ewens but for an intervention from Easdon and the defender before Mia McAulay couldn’t quite turn the ball home after arriving late round the back.
The January player of the month winner Rowe was continuing to make things happen as the Gers still went in search of the opening goal as the game approached the interval. The midfielder rode multiple challenges inside the area before trying a shot, but the high effort was tipped behind by Easdon.
Middag was next to register an attempt for the Light Blues with five minutes of original first half time remaining. A ball fell nicely on the edge of the area for a half volley for the versatile defender, but her left footed effort landed in the hands of the goalkeeper.
The Gers had arguably their best chance of the half just a minute later. Arnot produced a clever skill to get the better of her marker on the right side after switching with McAulay temporarily. She cut the ball back for the well-placed Chelsea Cornet but the midfielder’s effort went over from close range at the angle.
After a goalless opening 45 minutes the Gers looked to up the intensity at the beginning of the second period. Arnot was seeing a lot of the ball on the right side after the restart. After a couple of blocked deliveries she managed to pick out Ross with a cross at the near post, but the striker’s flicked header was held by Easdon.
The Light Blues were having to be patient as Brian Graham’s side continued to hold their own. They looked to work the ball from left to right on numerous occasions as they awaited an opening. Cornet tried her luck from range but again it was wide of the target.
Jo Potter’s side were continuing to be frustrated as it was Hill next to try her luck. The defender collected the ball from range and attempted a shot that flew well over the top of the bar.
The game approached the final 15 minute-mark as we remained without a goal in Glasgow. Rangers still looked the more likely of the two to break the deadlock but the hosts were holding their shape well and limiting them to anything clear-cut.
Rio Hardy almost provided the moment which would surely have been the winner. A cross from the right side was met by the substitute inside the area with her head, but Easdon made the stop from close range to deny the forward with just over five minutes of normal time remaining.
Few clear-cut chances were to follow as the Gers had to settle for a point as they now prepare for their massive Old Firm league match at Ibrox next weekend.
