Report: Rangers 2-2 Motherwell

RANGERS gave up a two-goal half-time advantage to draw 2-2 with Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership this afternoon.

An own-goal and a Fashion Jr strike had Gers ahead, but Well levelled through goals from Jordan Roberts and Kaiyne Woolery.

Manager Gio van Bronckhorst named two changes to his side for this afternoon’s match - from the team which came through against Borussia Dortmund on Thursday night, Glen Kamara and Fashion Jr came in for Borna Barisic and Ryan Jack.

That meant it was a back five of Allan McGregor in goal with captain James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, John Lundstram and Calvin Bassey in front of him.

Kamara is in the middle of the park next to Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo, while up front, Fashion Jr and Ryan Kent played in support of Alfredo Morelos.

Rangers began full of intent, and hesitancy in the Motherwell defence allowed Alfredo Morelos the opportunity to get a shot away from 15-yards which came back off the bar with goalkeeper Liam Kelly closing him down.

Kelly then made a fine save from a dipping Tavernier effort that was arrowing for the top corner, while Lundstram headed wide on the end of a Kent cross as Gers kept up the pressure from the resulting corner.

Kelly then made a remarkable stop from a Lundstram drive from just outside the area before on 22 minutes, the richly-deserved opener arrived.

From the right, Kent delivered a super ball just shy of the six-yard box, and in his attempts to stop Morelos getting onto it, Bevis Mugabi saw the ball ricochet off him and fly past Kelly and into the net.

It certainly was coming, and just over a minute later, it was 2-0. This time on the left, Kent took on both Liam Donnelly and Stephen O’Donnell down the left and beat both of them to deliver to the back post for Fashion Jr.

The ball was ever-so slightly behind the Zambian international, but he adjusted well to finish with brilliant power on the half-volley back across Kelly.

Mugabi hooked a Kent effort off the line, while Arfield had an 18-yard effort with the outside of his left foot go just wide.

Into the second half, and Kelly saved well from Tavernier at his front post before on 52 minutes, Motherwell pulled one back – Kaine Woolery showed a fine burst of pace down the right to cross and provide for Jordan Roberts to tap home from close range.

Morelos thought he had the third on 55 minutes as he headed home a Kent cross, but he was harshly adjudged to be offside when he looked at-worst level with the last defender.

Morelos, under pressure, then headed a Tavernier corner off-target, while the offside flag was to again go against him again when Kent put him in.

Kelly saved well from Kent at the end of a well-worked corner routine, but those missed opportunities were to haunt Gers as Kaine Woolery levelled matters on 77 minutes after battling to win space in the area for the shot.

Ricki Lamie had an opportunity to make it 3-2, while Goldson could have done likewise at the other end, but Kelly saved.

Sub Kemar Roofe was denied on the half-volley by Kelly at the back post when a Kent cross reached him, but ‘Well were to hold out for the point.
