Report: Rangers 4-1 Ross County

RANGERS took their final Ibrox bow before next week’s UEFA Europa League final by defeating Ross County 4-1.

Goals from Scott Wright, James Tavernier, Fashion Jr and Amad secured the points to bring the curtain down on home matches for the season.

Manager van Bronckhorst named seven changes to his side for this evening’s Scottish Premiership match with Ross County.

From the team which defeated Dundee United on Sunday, Tavernier, Borna Barisic, Connor Goldson and Wright retained their starting places and were joined tonight by Allan McGregor, Calvin Bassey, John Lundstram, Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara, Scott Wright, Borna Barisic and Alex Lowry.

That meant it was a back five of McGregor in goal with Tavernier, Goldson, Bassey and Barisic in front of him.

Kamara, Lundstram and Lowry were in the middle of the park with Aribo, Wright and Kent up front.

It was Gers who began the perkier, and a decent Aribo effort from distance was deflected behind, while man of the moment Lundstram was denied by goalkeeper Ross Laidlaw when set up beautifully by Aribo.

Lundstram was denied again by Laidlaw, while Tavernier had a shot blocked as Gers peppered the County goal with efforts.

The breakthrough was always coming, and it arrived on 13 minutes. Barisic’s corner was flicked on at the front post by Goldson, and following up at the back post to tap into an empty net for his sixth of the season.

Goldson found himself in the unusual position to shoot just over from 25-yards soon after, before the big central defender headed wide on the end of another excellent Barisic corner.

On 28 minutes, Tavernier was upended in the area by Alex Iacovitti for a pretty clear penalty award. The captain himself took it, and despite Laidlaw going the right way, his accuracy was superb as he found the far right corner.

Lowry brought a good save out of Laidlaw as half-time approached. But 2-0 was how it was to remain at the interval.

Both Lowry and Kent had close-range efforts blocked by fine County blocks at the start of the second half, while Goldson got his head to another corner that went over.

Laidlaw grasped a Wright header out of the air before with their first attempt on goal, County pulled one back as Jordan White curled a super effort beyond the reach of McGregor and into the back of the net.

Amad came close to restoring the two goal advantage as he drilled a shot across the face of goal, while a Steven Davis effort was gathered by the goalkeeper.

Then on 82 minutes, the third did arrive. Sub Fashion Jr stooped low superbly to head a Tavernier corner into the back of the net to secure the points.

A stupendous piece of skill from Amad to beat Iacovitti all ends up should have led to goal number four, but he fired wide of the far post.

Amad wasn’t to be denied though, as he grabbed his goal in injury-time, tapping home a fine Bassey ball at the back post.

Gers now move on to face Hearts in their last league match on Saturday.
