Two penalties from Alex Lowry, bookending Bailey Rice’s long-range effort, defined the opening period in Glasgow as the young Gers raced out to a 3-1 lead.
Burnley restored hope minutes into the second half, before Rangers quickly re-established their superiority through goals from Thompson Ishaka and Josh McPake.
David McCallum named five changes to his side from the midweek victory over Everton, lining Robby McCrorie up in goals as Rice, Adam Devine, Ishaka and Kristian Webster came into the starting side.
Rangers wasted precious little time in stamping their authority on the game. A sweeping move through the heart of the opposition defence released Zak Lovelace inside the penalty area, with the Englishman brought to the deck under a late challenge from a Burnley defender. The referee immediately put the whistle to his mouth, allowing Alex Lowry to stride forward from 12 yards and dispatch low into the bottom corner.
However, the Clarets were unperturbed by the early setback and were enjoying frequent forays into the Light Blues penalty area in the opening exchanges. Basilio Rieno-Socoliche showed nimble footwork on the right-hand side before centring to Joe Westley lurking in the penalty area, although the forward could only steer his finish off target.
McCrorie was called into action moments later, springing low to his right to deny Lewis Richardson’s near post flick after the away side worked a clever crossing opportunity on the left-hand side.
The young Gers successfully rode the wave of Burnley pressure and were unfortunate not to double their advantage on 25 minutes when Lowry’s in-swinging cross missed the head of Kristian Webster by a whisker at the far post.
However, the back of the net was rippling just three minutes later as the home side extended their buffer in the contest. Lovelace was involved in the danger once again, laying the ball perfectly into the stride of Bailey Rice who curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner from 25 yards out.
Burnley offered an immediate riposte to halve the deficit as Benn Ward rose highest from a Marcel Lewis free-kick to power a header beyond McCrorie from close range.
The action continued as the Clarets came close to finding a quickfire equaliser. Joe Westley, a towering presence in the away side’s forward line, looked poised to loop his header over McCrorie from point blank range. As the ball inched towards the goalline, however, Webster was on hand to hack the ball clear.
That proved the cue for the young Gers to find a third of the afternoon. A ball played into the left channel released Lovelace in-behind, who was halted illegally in his tracks as he advanced into the danger area. Lowry took charge of penalty duties for the second time on the afternoon, firing home the rebound after Charlie Casper was equal to his initial spot-kick.
The start of the second half saw the visitors reduce the arrears from the penalty spot as Westley sent McCrorie the wrong way from 12 yards.
The back-and-forth nature of the contest continued as the Light Blues found their fourth goal of the contest shortly into the second period. Lovelace continued to stretch the Burnley defence and latched onto a pinpoint through pass from Lowry before bearing down on goal. The Englishman was denied by a diving save from Casper, although Ishaka was quick to pounce on the loose ball and curl home the rebound from the edge of the penalty area.
The sunshine quickly turned to rain in Glasgow, but that never halted the home side’s momentum as they extended their lead further midway through the second period. Substitute Josh McPake was only on the pitch a matter of minutes when he was fed by a clever outside-of-the-boot pass from Lovelace, composing himself before planting his finish into far corner.
McCrorie produced a fantastic double stop in the latter stages to keep the scoreline intact, with McPake denied by Casper as the substitute looked to double his tally in the game.
Westley netted his second of the afternoon with the last kick of the game for the Clarets, before the referee brought the game to an end shortly after to round off a positive afternoon – and week - for the B Team to open their Best v Best games programme.
The young Gers will now begin their SPFL Trust Trophy campaign with a trip to Ainslie Park to face Spartans on Tuesday evening.
