Report: Rangers Defeat Celtic In Old Firm Cup Clash

RANGERS secured passage to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals with a fantastic 2-0 Old Firm victory here at Ibrox.

First half goals from Steven Davis and a Jonjoe Kenny own-goal had the Light Blues comfortable, while Allan McGregor saved a second half Odsonne Edouard penalty to keep the clean sheet intact and set up a meeting with St Johnstone back here next weekend.

Manager Steven Gerrard named one change today - from the side which defeated Hibernian here a week ago, manager Gerrard replaces Kemar Roofe with Scott Arfield.

That meant it was a back five of Allan McGregor in goal with Nathan Patterson, Connor Goldson, Fil Helander and Borna Barisic in front of him.

Arfield joined Glen Kamara and Steven Davis in the middle of the park, while up front, Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent played in support of Alfredo Morelos.

One minute of silence was held prior to kick-off, as Rangers again remembered the life of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, following his funeral yesterday.

The opening stages were high-energy and pretty even, with perhaps the home side just edging it in-terms of possession.

Then, with 10 minutes showing on the clock, Rangers hit the front with a sweeping move from deep in their own half to the back of the Celtic net.

Connor Goldson started it, superbly taking the ball off the toe of Callum McGregor as he looked to burst through.

He got it onto Kent in the middle of the park to turn superbly away from Scott Brown, before being taken out by Stephen Welsh, but in doing do, Kent got the ball to the right for Morelos.

He then fed Aribo to take it into the area, with his shot deflected high into the air by Kristoffer Ajer. Coming onto the end of the loose ball with his back to goal was Steven Davis, and with an overhead kick, he flicked the ball over Scott Bain and into the net for his second of the season.

It was precisely the start Gers were after, but at the other end, McGregor had to be lively to turn a decent Edouard drive away, while Ryan Christie had a shot from the edge of the box go just wide.

McGregor then tipped a strike from namesake Callum over, while Fil Helander did well to get an Ajer effort off the line.

Gers did well to weather that storm, and began to see more of the possession in advanced areas again.

That was always going to lead to chances, and Nathan Patterson brilliantly skinned Diego Laxalt out on the right before firing his shot into the side netting.

That was just a foretaste of what was to come on 35 minutes, however.

Again from the right, the outstanding Aribo was showing some real magic, and Laxalt was again skinned all ends up as Aribo glided past him looked to find Ryan Kent at the front post.

Before Kent could pounce, however, the ball came off Jonjoe Kenny and dropped beyond Bain and into the back of the net to hand the Light Blues the cushion they were looking for.

Into the second half, and Allan McGregor made a smart stop from David Turnbull just after the restart, while Odsonne Edouard really should have pulled one back, lofting over an empty net from close ranger after being set up by Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Some slack play in defence then allowed Edouard to return the favour for Elyounoussi, but diving amazingly at his feet to block was McGregor, yet again being the man for this occasion.

Gers looked for a third, with Stephen Welsh denying Arfield after a neat one-two with Morelos.

Bain then beat away a fierce Kent drive from 25 yards after he skinned Brown, but that went only as far as Morelos, albeit he couldn’t get enough on his shot to beat the Celtic ‘keeper.

On 78 minutes, Celtic were awarded a penalty – Leigh Griffiths going down easily under little contact from Aribo inside the area.

Edouard took it, but Allan McGregor claimed yet another Old Firm penalty save, diving to his right to deny the Celtic striker.

Sub Kemar Roofe tested Bain with a long-range shot as Gers again threatened, while Davis almost set up Aribo but somehow Celtic managed to smuggle the ball away for a corner.
