It was a tale of three penalties as Stevie Smith’s side were forced to come from behind after the Danish outfit struck inside the opening five minutes from the spot.
The visitors would then spurn the opportunity to double their advantage from 12 yards midway through the second half, before the Light Blues manufactured their merited equaliser from the penalty spot when Calum Adamson marked his return from injury in fine fashion.
The young Gers were presented with an early warning inside two minutes when Jack Wyllie was caught in possession and later indebted to Rydnn McGuire who produced a terrific stop with his feet to deny Jonathan Moalem what looked a certain opener from close range.
And Rangers failed to heed the early scare when, two minutes, a late challenge on the skilful Abdul Daramy by Wyllie left the referee with no other option than to point to the penalty spot.
Moalem, denied by McGuire moments earlier, made no mistake on this occasion as he curled his spot-kick down low and out of the reach of the 16-year-old goalkeeper.
Copenhagen’s poise in possession was abundantly clear in the opening exchanges and they almost engineered a second three minutes later when the lively duo of Daramy and Moalem combined, although the latter contrived to drag his finish wide.
Indeed, it took the Light Blues until the 10thminute to fashion their first attempt in anger; Callum Burnside striding onto Lewis Stewart’s quick free-kick to rifle an effort through a crowd of bodies and wide of the far post.
Slowly but surely, Stevie Smith’s side began to gain a foothold in the contest, which would have made the concession of a second goal when Moalem deflected David Katlego Hanse’s strike even more difficult to take if it weren’t for the intervention of the post.
Chris Eadie, himself one of the more experienced in the side this afternoon at 17-years-old, then forced Tobias Harild in the Copenhagen goal into a smart stop at his near post following an Alex Smith cut-back.
Rangers were truly in the ascendancy, and they ought to have restored parity when Eadie latched onto a smart slide rule pass from Aiden McCallion, but he could only slam his finish against the outside of the post.
Eadie couldn’t quite believe his misfortune in the first half as, just five minutes later, he lifted his finish from another Smith pull-back over the crossbar.
A swift counter-attack from the home side saw Smith denied by Harild, before Moalem stung the palms of McGuire down low as the action moved from end-to-end in the dying embers of the opening period.
The half-time interval prompted a reshuffling of the pack as Cameron Fernie replaced Aiden Crilly in midfield.
However, it was the Danish visitors who threatened first as Daramy, catching the eye on the left-hand side, jinked inside and forced McGuire into a comfortable diving stop.
The Light Blues were certainly banging on the door of an equaliser when they did venture forward, with Oliver Goodbrand caught in two minds at the far post when Burnside stood up a delightful cross for the 15-year-old.
There was a special moment on the hour-mark as Adamson, who suffered a broken ankle just a few short months ago, marked his return to action as he replaced McCallion in the engine room.
For all of Rangers’ joy in the second period, the game threatened to run away from them when the referee dubiously pointed to the penalty spot for the second time on the afternoon.
The post, however, came to their reprieve when the Danish side failed to take advantage and, in a sense, justice was served.
It set up an intriguing final quarter of an hour as the Light Blues sought a response with a much-changed side to the team which started the match.
Gustav Fritz would then come to Copenhagen’s rescue when Cormac Christie fed Cameron Scott beyond the opposing backline and the full-back was forced the goalkeeper into a fingertip stop.
And Rangers’ persistence soon paid off with nine minutes remaining when a arcing pass from Scott on the break found Christie, with the substitute showing clever footwork to draw the contact and the referee awarded his third penalty of the contest.
From the resulting spot-kick, Adamson stepped forward to squeeze his penalty beyond Fritz and the spoils were shared in Milngavie.
