The young Gers went ahead twice in the first half after Conor Owen bundled home from a corner and Kyle Glasgow struck from a tight angle, but they were forced to settle for a share of the spoils when Logan Jimenez levelled for the capital club with just over 15 minutes remaining.
The draw keeps the side level on points with tonight’s visitors and St. Mirren at the summit of the league table, with the two sides set to lock horns once again in seven days’ time in the League Cup.
Liam Ross made two changes to his side for the visit of the Edinburgh side, among whom Kyle Glasgow returned to the starting lineup following his exploits for the Under-16s at the Alkass International Cup.
Rangers couldn’t have drawn up a better start as they opened the scoring inside six minutes from a corner.
An inswinging delivery from the left-hand side ricocheted around the penalty area where Owen, who was denied a set-piece goal seven days ago against Hearts, was on hand to volley beyond the Hibs goalkeeper.
The hosts certainly began the better of the two sides and they could have doubled their advantage shortly after when Lyle Wark raced onto an Owen lofted pass and squared dangerously across goal where Zebedee Lawson’s effort at the far post was cleared off the goalline.
But for all of the Gers’ early pressure they played their way into trouble when Rydnn McGuire was short with a pass and the away side latched onto the loose ball before dispatching into the bottom corner.
Max Cameron, deputising as the central striker in the absence of Chris Condy, sought to restore Rangers’ advantage when he shimmied inside and unleashed a strike from the edge of the penalty area which cannoned back off the post.
A free-kick delivery was almost headed goalwards by Jack Wyllie moments later, with Calum Young at full-stretch in an attempt to knock the ball on target.
Glasgow had been hitherto quiet in the contest, but he underlined his precocious talent on the stroke of the half-time interval when, surrounded by a cluster of Hibs bodies on the edge of the penalty area, he dug out a cross-cum-shot which sailed over Ryan Mallon and into the back of the net.
A change of system from Hibs brought a renewed energy at the outset of the second period, with McGuire called into action on a couple of occasions.
Ben Hutton then slashed wide following neat approach play on the right-hand side from Alexander Smith and substitute Ashton Patton.
Ross turned to his bench by introducing Oliver Hynd and Coben Fergusson, with the latter having impressed alongside Glasgow in Qatar recently.
The pace of Cameron in-behind was a constant thorn in Hibs’ backline, stretching the visitors horizontally and vertically as they committed more bodies forward.
However, the away side struck the equaliser with just over a quarter of an hour remaining when the Gers afforded too much time and space for the delivery and Jimenez rose highest at the far post to nod his header into the bottom corner.
The game suddenly surged into an end-to-end affair, with Hibs boasting opportunities to improbably win the game with a couple of clear-cut chances.
And yet the biggest chance belonged to Lawson with just two minutes remaining when he received a pass from Smith, dropped a pair of Hibs bodies with a delightful dummy, but could only flash his right-footed finish agonisingly wide of the far post with only the goalkeeper to beat.
