A blistering second-half showing was rewarded with three goals of the utmost quality as Aiden McCallion’s spot-kick was added to by strikes from Zebedee Lawson, Ben Hutton and Ashton Scally.
The triumph lifts the young Gers three points clear at the summit of the league table, albeit they have played two more games than Hibernian and St. Mirren, respectively.
Malky Thomson named six changes to the side which lost out narrowly to Hibernian in League Cup action on Monday, with 15-year-old Luca Rankin among those introduced to the midfield.
Rangers began the brighter of the two sides, purring through Max Cameron on the left-hand side when he received a pass from captain Aiden McCallion before hitting the byline and seeing his dangerous, low-driven cross cut out by Jay Gillies.
The 17-year-old winger menaced once again moments later when space opened up on the left-hand side owing to a smart underlapping run from McCallion, but with the goal in his sights the teenager dragged wide of the near post.
Luca Rankin was then unfortunate when he managed to scoop an effort goalwards from a deep Cameron Fernie delivery – not an obvious aerial target due to his size – but onto the roof of the net.
And yet perhaps the best opportunity of the opening spell belonged to the visitors when the Gers were guilty of turning over possession inside their own half. Play was spread wide to Lucas Weir, who did well to chop inside Conor Owen before Rydnn McGuire came to the home side’s rescue.
The lively Cameron bore the full brunt of a late challenge from Andrew Arnott soon after, with the tackle warranting the first booking of the evening.
Motherwell were left scratching their heads as to why they didn’t break the deadlock when a pinpoint free-kick delivery from the right was met by Samuel Ngandu unmarked inside the penalty area, but fortunately for the home side, the defender contrived to glance wide of the target.
Cameron’s evening was over before the interval when he was unable to shake off his earlier knock.
It precipitated a reshuffle in the forward line as 15-year-old Ruaridh Hall entered the fray and Glasgow moved to the left-hand side, immediately threatening when he sized up his marker and forced a smart diving save from the Motherwell goalkeeper.
Hall was presented with an almost immediate opportunity to break open the contest shortly before the half-time whistle was blown when Rocco McColm was short with a backpass, but the substitute’s effort was at a comfortable height for Jack McConnell to repel.
The second period nearly began in the worst possible fashion for Rangers when Arran Clark worked himself into a promising area before delivering a wicked ball across the near post which Owen inadvertently turned against his post.
Down the opposite end, the home side threatened when Zebedee Lawson combined neatly with Ben Hutton, whose effort cannoned off an orange jersey before the same feat befell Scally when the ball broke to the fall-back on the corner of the penalty area.
But there was an added intensity to the Gers after the interval, and they got their just rewards on 57 minutes when a sweeping move freed Glasgow on the left inside the penalty area and the 16-year-old jinked wonderfully between the challenges before being brought down by Ngandu.
There were no doubts over the penalty taker as McCallion strode forward and dispatched confidently into the bottom corner.
Proceedings got even better for the home side when just two minutes later, they doubled their cushion in the contest.
It was tremendous persistence from Lawson, which forced an error from Zander McAllister as he received a pass from his goalkeeper with his back to play, stealing the ball from the full-back before slotting a cool finish beyond McConnell.
The English winger almost doubled his tally in the second period when he showed excellent footwork inside the penalty area, prompting a low save from McConnell who stuck out a hopeful leg between the posts.
A third, however, duly arrived for the home side with 20 minutes remaining.
Motherwell were guilty of failing to clear their lines from a cross when Fernie reacted first inside the penalty area before playing a clever backheel into the path of Hutton who fizzed a low finish into the bottom corner to ultimately end the game as a contest.
Further chances beckoned when James Reid glanced a header onto the crossbar before Hall was denied by another fine McConnell save.
And the scoring was rounded off in the dying embers when Rangers cut through the heart of the visitors once again as McCallion picked out Scally advancing down the left who arrowed a fine finish in off the post.
