It was another important three points for Malky Thomson’s as they continued their unbeaten run in the league.
Lizzie Arnot opened the scoring before a Naimh Farrelly own goal doubled the advantage before the break. Gers were reduced to 10 players with 20 minutes remaining as goalkeeper Jenna Fife was shown a straight red card but responded well as Jane Ross extended the lead.
City got a goal back in the final five minutes of the game through Claire Shine.
Malky Thomson named two changes to his side from the last league outing against Hibernian with Nicola Docherty and Megan Bell coming into the starting XI. Brogan Hay was named on the bench for this one, with Rachel McLauchlan missing out through injury.
Rangers lined-up with Jenna Fife in goal and a back four of Nicola Docherty, Brianna Westrup, Chantelle Swaby and Demi Vance.
Chelsea Cornet, Tessel Middag and Sam Kerr were in midfield, while Megan Bell and Lizzie Arnot supported striker Jane Ross.
Kirsty Howat was back in the matchday squad for the first time since April following knee surgery and was joined on the bench by new signing Ciara Grant, Emma Brownlie, Zoe Ness, Brogan Hay, Kayla McCoy and goalkeeper Megan Cunningham.
It was a bright start from the Light Blues as they looked to put Glasgow City under pressure early in the match. Rangers had two quick corners in the opening five minutes as captain Brianna Westrup headed just wide.
The home side continued to threaten and had a fantastic chance to open the scoring with 8 minutes on the clock as Lizzie Arnot cut inside the edge of the box and fired a powerful shot towards goal which rattled back off the post before the danger was cleared by Glasgow City.
The early pressure paid off for Rangers and it was a fantastic strike from Lizzie Arnot which opened the scoring. A Glasgow City clearance landed at Tess Middag in midfield and she picked out Arnot in space outside the box. The forward took a touch before drilling a left-footed shot beyond Lee Alexander and into the back of the net.
Glasgow City broke shortly after through Priscilla Chinchilla as they looked for a route back into the match. She drove towards the byline before picking out Odu Fulutudilu in the box but her effort was blocked before Lauren Davidson shot wide of the target.
Jane Ross was denied a second for Rangers as she got on the end of a Demi Vance cross to turn and get a shot away at the front post, but her effort was blocked by Alexander and went out for a corner.
From the resulting corner, Gers did double their advantage. The ball was swung into the box by Lizzie Arnot and under the pressure of Rangers captain Brianna Westrup, Naimh Farrelly headed into her own net.
It was a relentless first-half from Rangers, as Westrup saw an effort cleared off the line just before the break.
In injury time, Glasgow City had their best chance of the half as Fulutudilu broke down the right before beating Brianna Westrup and picking out Hayley Lauder in the box but Jenna Fife stood strong to divert her shot away from goal.
Malky Thomson made one change to his side at the break as Chelsea Cornet was replaced after taking a knock in the first-half, with new signing Ciara Grant coming on to make her Rangers debut.
A Hayley Lauder free-kick in the opening five minutes of the second-half caused problems for Rangers as it was swung into a dangerous area before meeting the head of Claire Walsh but her header was cleared off the line by Chantelle Swaby.
The visitors were searching for a goal back early in the second-half but again Chantelle Swaby was on hand to get a strong clearance as Fulutudilu broke into the box.
Rangers were reduced to 10 players in the 68th minute as Fulutidulu drove through on goal and Jenna Fife came out of the box and was judged to have fouled the forward and was shown a straight red by referee George Calder.
Megan Bell was substituted as goalkeeper Megan Cunningham entered the field. For the second time this afternoon Rangers were denied by the woodwark as debutant Ciara Grant saw her shot from the edge of the box bounce back off the post.
With 15 minutes remaining, Rangers had their third of the afternoon. Lizzie Arnot picked up the ball on the right wing before finding Jane Ross in the box and she guided the ball into the bottom corner with a well-placed header.
Another dangerous free-kick from the visitors saw them get a goal back with five minutes remaining as Lauder whipped the ball into the box and it was tapped home at the back post by substitute Claire Shine.
Malky Thomson’s side saw out the remaining stages of the match to secure all three points.
