Report: Three Goals & Three Points For Rangers B

RANGERS B picked up another three points in the Lowland League this afternoon with a 3-0 victory away to Edinburgh University.

A first-half goal from Lewis McKinnon had Rangers a goal ahead at the break, before Alex Lowry and Cole McKinnon added to the tally in the second-half.

David McCallum named four changes to his side with Aaron Cervantes and Jack Harkness coming in for their first Lowland League appearances of the season, while Ross McCausland and Arron Lyall were also named in the starting XI.

Rangers were dominating possession in the opening stages of the match but failed to test Nick Buxton in the Edinburgh University goal.

The Light Blues had their first real chance in the 20th minute as Arron Lyall turned well to feed the ball through to Alex Lowry. The midfielder took a shot from distance which was pushed wide for a corner by Buxton.

From the resulting corner Rangers found the breakthrough, the set-piece was worked out to Charlie McCann on the left and he showed fantastic skill to dribble into the box before cutting the ball back to centre-half Lewis McKinnon who guided his shot into the back of the net.

The Gers looked to capitalise on their advantage as Ross McCausland cut in from the right to get a shot away but it was blocked by the Edinburgh University goalkeeper.

McCausland had another shot saved by Buxton after a good solo run by the Northern Ireland international before Arron Lyall saw a shot deflected just wide.

From the resulting corner, Robbie Fraser delivered a dangerous ball into the box which met the head of Gers’ captain Leon King but it was just inches high of the target.

Just before the break Rangers were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box as Alex Lowry was fouled as he looked to push Rangers forward. Left-back Robbie Fraser stepped up to the set-piece and curled an effort towards goal which Buxton had to push wide to deny the young Gers a second goal of the afternoon.

Edinburgh University had their first shot at goal in the final stages of the first-half as a one-two between Patrick Baird and Max Condie resulted in a shot from Condie but it was well wide of the Rangers goal, before Innes Lawson saw a shot blocked.

Into the second-half Rangers came out strong as they looked to add to Lewis McKinnon’s first-half goal. Robbie Fraser saw a shot blocked by the Edinburgh Uni defence before Arron Lyall had an effort saved by Buxton.

Just 10 minutes into the second-half David McCallum made a double change as Ross McCausland and Arron Lyall were replaced by Robbie Ure and Tony Weston. Alex Lowry saw a shot saved by Buxton before Charlie McCann dragged an effort just wide of the target as Rangers pushed for the second goal.

That goal did come in the 68th minute. Robbie Ure put pressure on an Edinburgh University defender inside their own box, with the Gers striker coming away with the ball. He picked out Alex Lowry inside the area and he showed composure to slot the ball home.

Substitute Tony Weston came close to adding a third as a powerful effort from distance bounced back off the post before the danger was cleared by Edinburgh.

The third goal did come on the 85th minute as Weston found space on the left to pick out Cole McKinnon at the back post who headed home.
