The ambitious 39-year-old is fully aware of the demands that come with sitting in the Ibrox hotseat but he is ready for the challenge and can’t wait to get started.
Martin, of course, is a former Rangers player having had a loan spell at the club in 2018 from Norwich City and he is understandably proud to be returning to Glasgow after being in charge of MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton previously.
He said: "My time as a player here, it wasn't to do with not being able to deal with the expectation or pressure, my body was just giving up on me slowly but surely which was frustrating.
"As a player it is the worst feeling and it comes to everyone at different stages. Mine was a bit earlier than I would have liked but I think it was one of the big pulls of this job - the intensity of it, the expectation and the level of scrutiny that you have to perform.
“I was better when the stakes were high and I feel that even last year at Southampton when the play-offs came, I just felt alive when there is big pressure.
"I feel like I have a high capacity for stress which I think you need in a job like this one and I'm looking forward to it."
A former defender who earned 29 caps for Scotland, Russell gave his thoughts on how he wants his Rangers team to play when he spoke to RangersTV.
He said: "I just want us to dominate as much of the game as possible with the ball and without the ball and to dominate the transition periods.
“Set pieces as well are going to be so important but I just want the team to be on the pitch and outrun and outwork everyone and the rest will work out.
"With the ball there might be little tweaks here and there with formation and shape and how we build up and how we attack in the final third and what numbers on the top line, all that sort of stuff and the detail.
"I think the focus now has to be on assessing the group as much as we possibly can and making sure that we understand, which we have a good understanding already, what areas we really need to strengthen and then giving other people a chance as well.
"Hopefully by then we will have some new recruits to help the group but I’m also really conscious that I want to give some good players a chance - and people always surprise you in football.
"I'm always open and willing to be surprised so I'm looking forward to that, to really see what the players can do. I know they haven't had a long time off so hopefully they can be in a good place physically and we can really crack on pretty quickly. But yeah, the hard work really begins now."
Russell also had a message for the Rangers supporters, he added: "I said it in the press conference and I really mean it, the supporters are the most important people at the football club because they will outlast anyone.
"It's something I will be incredibly grateful for and I will be all in to try and give them a team to be proud of, to feel connected to, to believe in, to enjoy watching and to win. Ultimately, that is why we are here.
"I hope they feel the same energy and excitement I do about the freshness that is coming into the club right now in terms of personnel and hopefully together we can create something really special.
“I think with some momentum and with the energy and everyone feeling connected and together, we can do some incredible things."
