Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week: Inspiring On and Off the Pitch

AS part of Scottish Women & Girls in Sport week, the club followed footballer Megan Cunningham across her life as a goalkeeper between the posts for the Gers, her job as a firefighter, coaching within various levels of the club, including the academy sides and her time spent away from work.

This week marks an awareness campaign dedicated to promoting and celebrating the involvement of females in all levels of sport and physical activity.

It aims to highlight the achievements of women and girls in sport, from grassroots to elite level, whilst also encouraging greater participation in physical activity by addressing barriers such as gender stereotypes, access and representation.

The campaign also helps support gender equity in sport organisations, leadership roles, coaching and media coverage, whilst helping to inspire the next generation of young girls to take up sport in any form by showing role models and positive stories within the game.

Goalkeeper Cunningham has enjoyed a successful career in football to date, joining the Gers as they entered their professional status back in 2019. Whilst also enduring a successful loan spell along the way with fellow SWPL club Partick Thistle, showcasing her experience in her role to help inspire youngsters within the Light Blues’ academy in a coaching role, whilst balancing it all with being a firefighter and still enjoying her time away from all her commitments.

Tune in to RangersTV for several features across this week as we follow Megan across her various roles and discuss the importance of sport and what it means to her.
