Steven Gerrard: Given More Than I Asked For

THRILLED Steven Gerrard was given even more than he asked for this afternoon as Rangers turned in a stunning performance to demolish Motherwell 6-1 at Fir Park.

The Light Blues were in superb form, netting six wonderful goals and playing some excellent football throughout to turn in their biggest win and best performance of the season to date.

Speaking to RangersTV, boss Gerrard beamed: "They gave us everything we wanted and some more. I thought it was a really emphatic victory and we could have had more goals - I thought we looked dangerous throughout and the pleasing thing for me was, we looked like us.

"Everything we have tried to build and everything I have asked for in-terms of an identity and a philosophy, the players have delivered, they have carried the gameplan out and every single one of them stood up today and were fantastic.

"The players know, and they can see and hear the fans' reaction at the end. I think that was a reaction of pure satisfaction, entertainment and I don't know what it cost here for the supporters to come here, but they got more than enough for their money.

"That is down to the players' performance and of course, we have gone back to where we want to in-terms of control, but we need to focus even more now in-terms of the league and keep pushing on and keep fighting for every point."

After going a goal down early on, James Tavernier netted a superb equaliser and then provided an assist for Fashion Jr to make it 2-1 before the break.

It was gutsy stuff from the captain, and the manager agreed, continuing: "It was pure character. He obviously realises what happened in midweek but James is that type that I want a fire back.

"I thought his all-round performance was top today and probably his strongest of the season.

"We know he has got the quality, he played like a captain today and he would have been forgiven for maybe being a little bit less focused today on his 30th birthday, but I thought he set the standard today and showed what a good captain he is."

Fashion Jr was the star of the show with a hat-trick, and while Gerrard was delighted with his efforts, he took time to also mention the performance of Steven Davis in the rout.

He said: "It was an absolute midfield masterclass - everything you need to do as a midfielder, and not just the passing and the running, but the second balls and the positional play was outstanding.

"And look, Fashion will get all the headlines and rightly so. He deserves it and he has worked hard and come on and made a difference in his cameos, but he has just showed something different in the last week to 10 days that he is more settled now and he is ready and his teammates are starting to trust him and he is trusting the way we play.

"We felt, as a staff, he was ready to be put in for an opportunity and he has grabbed it with both hands."

Gers will now jet out to Copenhagen to face Brondby in the Europa League on Thursday for a hugely important match, and Gerrard added: "Sometimes, you have got to do the other thing and bring a few people down and get everyone right and balanced and ready to perform again as we are going to need another big, strong win away from home."
