The young Gers netted three times in the second half to down their Edinburgh visitors after Alex Smith broke the deadlock with a header on the stroke of half-time.
An Aiden McCallion spot-kick was supplemented by goals from Calum Adamson and Chris Eadie as Rangers collected their first three points of the campaign.
Speaking to RangersTV after the triumph, Smith said of the display: “I’ve been in this environment a long time so I know that winning is important, but we must win in the right way. I thought we done that for a lot of the game today.
“I asked them to start the season well and they done that.
“I thought Hearts were actually decent. I don’t think it was a 4-0 game and they had big chances; Rydnn [McGuire] made some big saves too.
“But within the game there was real quality as well and moments where the combinations were really clean and good.”
It was a comparatively more youth starting lineup from the Gers this afternoon as 2009-born duo Max Cameron and Ben Hutton were given the nod from the off.
Both players impressed throughout the 90 minutes – Cameron winning the spot-kick in which McCallion converted – but the Light Blues didn’t have it all their own way in a cagey opening first 45 minutes.
Thereafter, Smith’s side flexed their muscles, and the Head Coach hopes those newly introduced to the Under-19s set-up this year continue to build chemistry with their more senior teammates.
He added: “It’s just about finding the balance of everyone’s individual programme.
“Every individual on the pitch is at a different stage in their career, whether that’s looking to go on loan or starting out with the Under-19 group, so for us coaches it can be challenge because it’s finding the balance about what’s the right amount of game time.
“What was my message at half-time? I was a little bit frustrated. It felt to me that they were overcomplicating the game.
“The solutions were there for them and I was frustrated that they couldn’t see them. We showed them a few clips at half-time where we felt they could improve and at half-time they done that.
“When you’re bringing players off the bench with that goal you know they’re going to have an impact.
“I know their characters and they wanted to show me that they should have been playing – and I’ll have a few chaps at my door tomorrow – but you need to be ready to make an impact coming off the bench and the players we brought on definitely done that.”
