Speaking to the press ahead of the match, he said: “It’s a dream come true. As a captain and a player, it’s every kid’s dream when you’re playing football.
“When you watch Champions League games when you’re younger and you hear the music. To be playing in it and captaining your side is a dream come true for every boy.”
The Gers have tasted success in the Netherlands already this season, with the 1-0 away victory over PSV Eindhoven last month sealing the team’s place in the group stages of the competition.
He continued: “The character of the team is strong. We’ve played PSV and Feyenoord over here.
“Ajax obviously have their own records. They’re undefeated this season. We know it will be a tough test.
“The good thing about European football is that you have a midweek game to bounce back to the performances that you want and to rectify what you did.
“That’s what we’ve been doing. When the first whistle goes try to put in a performance that does credit to the team and the fans.”
