The SWPL now enters its split section with the top six teams playing each other twice in the final 12 games of the campaign, as the Light Blues return to league action against their city rivals.
Speaking to RangersTV in the build-up to the game the manager knows how important the game is in the context of their league season, with a victory in the game seeing the Gers leapfrog their opponents into second place in the table as they look for a strong end to the season.
He said: “There are two prompts, it is Celtic and I am sure they will want to beat us as well, it is the tie itself, and there is obviously the league position, if we win that we go two clear of Celtic.
“It will still be tight; this period that is coming up games will be thick and fast and it is the top six teams that have managed to get into that position that will be playing against each other and they will all want to finish as high as they can in the league.
“There has been a lot said about league positions with Glasgow City being at the top and Celtic a point ahead of us, but I think this clash, Rangers v Celtic, it doesn't matter what team is ahead of the other.
“The importance and kudos of playing against Celtic and performing well for us and getting a result is the main thing.”
Thomson has praised his side’s reaction from the last time the two teams met on February 24 with Gers winning all four matches in all competitions since without conceding a goal.
He continued: “We know at Rangers that you must bounce back and you have to bounce back strong, it starts straight away.
“After the Celtic game we were hurting, it didn't sit well with us, but we have got the ability now to park it because we know that the future is the most important and the next game is the most important thing to focus on.”
The manager feels his side are well prepared for the fixture with the team having eight days to get ready for the game.
He said: “This is ideal preparation to come off the back of scoring six goals, and to have a full week preparation leading up to playing a top club like Celtic is ideally what we would want.
“Obviously it doesn't quite work that way in terms of fixtures and things that happen, however we are quietly confident in what we are about and really looking forward to this challenge that is going to be set in front of us.
“This time round our preparation has been a lot better, in terms of getting the time spent on the detail that we wanted to put into this week, it has been really good and we have got the extra day ahead of this game coming up, we are really looking forward to it.
“We have put a lot of time and effort into it, the staff and the players, everybody is fully committed and desperate to do well.”
Thomson wants his side to use Broadwood Stadium to their advantage with the Gers having an impressive unbeaten home record this campaign so far as they look to come out on top in the derby.
He added: “The facilities that we have at Broadwood are great, the pitch size suits us, we are a team that is dynamic in terms of getting the ball into forward areas, taking people on and utilising the space that can be created, we will have to take full advantage of that and Broadwood certainly gives us that with the dimensions of it.”
