The Light Blues welcome Glasgow City to Govan with three teams still in the mix to lift the league title. Rangers trail Sunday's visitors by two points at the top of the table, level on points with Celtic and boasting a superior goal difference to their Old Firm rivals of just one.
Speaking to the media ahead of Sunday's highly-anticipated clash, Thomson said: "It's a unique situation. It's similar to the situation that a good friend of mine, Alex McLeish, who I've spoken to over the last few days about 2003. His advice to me was just to keep doing what we have been doing, to keep a level head, and deal with the game in isolation.
"We'll do the same as we always do, our planning and preparation has been good. First and foremost, we need to win the game, and that has been our mantra all season. If we do that then we'll need to have an ear on how many goals that we need. That's the way it's going to pan out.
"We know that we need to win the game first and foremost. We know the style and fashion that we're going to play in, but we may have to change that if we're needing goals. We may have to do something tactically in the moment. We have decided as a staff that we have enough experience to manage that in the moment, and the players throughout this season have bought into everything that we've done. The players are ready should we change the shape or the personnel."
Ibrox is set to welcome over 10,000 supporters through the turnstiles on Sunday afternoon - who will one ear on events across the city - and Thomson hopes that the women's game is able to capitalise on this weekend's interest.
He continued: "The 10,000-plus crowd that we’re going to get will be vocal enough to let us know sitting on the sidelines [about results elsewhere]. I was saying to the girls that it's unique in the sense they've done a lot of hard work to get here. We've had to claw back nine points to get ourselves back into a situation where we have some form of control. We speak a lot about what we can control, and the only thing that we can control is to plan and prepare properly as we have done, and to go into this game with the absolute mindset that we're going to win this game.
"The interest has been phenomenal. Certainly myself, the players and the staff, we've had phone call after phone call about how to get tickets. It's fantastic and exhilarating. The responsibility is on the players and the staff to continue what we're doing. We must continue promoting the game, and making sure that we work hard to put a good product on the pitch that's going to entice viewers to get captivated by it."
