Todd Cantwell: It's All About Winning

TODD Cantwell hopes the Viaplay Cup win is the start of a trophy-laden spell at Rangers.

The playmaker lifted his first winners’ medal in the Light Blue after the 1-0 victory over Aberdeen at Hampden.

Cantwell is adored by the Ibrox fans and says he wants to be remembered for his trophy wins, not his song.

Speaking to Rangers TV, he said: “It means a lot to me to win my first trophy with Rangers.

“There is no secret in saying that’s why I came here.

“Jack Butland and I have had conversations about it and it is what we want to be remembered for when we leave.

“It probably won’t be for our songs but what we win.

“Games like that are frustrating, especially for the fans, but for the players as well.

“You are playing a team who make it difficult in an environment where the pitch was boggy, so there was a lot going on.

“But it is all about winning and the manager has been crystal clear it is important in games like this that we win them.

“I think the team have come together and it is an old saying, but we have smelt the blood a little bit and I think it is important not to get carried away, there is a long season ahead, we have a lot of games to play and Europe to look forward to.

“We have to keep the heads down, stay focused and let the fans enjoy this.”

The game came less than 72 hours after the 3-2 victory over Real Betis is Spain which saw Philippe Clement’s side top their Europa League group.

Cantwell – who missed the match in Spain – was well aware that the club had a busy month, with five games still to go before the winter break.

Skipper James Tavernier was the match winner with the second half strike and Cantwell says it was typical of his captain to be the hero.

He added: “I am delighted, it’s been a turbulent start to the season. To get to this point and have a trophy is top.

“The boys put in a big shift on Thursday and the games are close together.

“We knew the schedule was heavy through December so to get a trophy now gives us a boost for the rest of the season.

“Tav does what he does. That is Tav for you.

“He has played a lot of games and he has done this before and he knows what he is doing.

“You can count on him in big moments.”
