He explained: “We gave it a fantastic effort last year, but unfortunately we fell short at the last game. There were times towards the end of the group where we had to pick teams that were maybe under-strength and the squad wasn’t strong enough to cope both domestically and in Europe to get out of the group.
“Having said that, I do feel this group is probably a bit more difficult than last years, so the challenge is tougher, but it is certainly one we want to take on. We don’t fear anyone in the group – we are the underdogs and we will go out and give it our best shot.
“I believe we have a squad capable of competing and giving it a good shot to get out.”
Gerrard also discussed the atmosphere at tonight’s game, adding: “These are the nights the supporters want and being a part of a big club, you have always got to try and get European football.
“I know the players are excited and ready – I am certainly looking forward to the game. There will be a lot of emotions in the stadium tomorrow and I think Fernando deserves that and I am sure both sets of supporters will pay their respects.
“I think everyone knows before a ball is kicked, if that was the case we would certainly dedicate it to him and his family.”
