Wright, who has been training with the first team regularly for some time and has this season been a regular backup to the pool of first team goalkeepers, has signed a new deal with the club until 2021.
Speaking to RangersTV, he said: “It means everything to me. Over the last year or eighteen months I’ve put in a lot of work and it means a lot more because of that.”
Wright has been in the clubs Academy for more than 10 years and has enjoyed three loan spells already in his career to continue his development, something he thinks has helped shape him as a footballer.
He said: “It’s really helped, over the past couple of seasons in the reserves, the development squad and the games programme where we’ve been able to play against some of the best teams in the world has stood me in good stead to go and train with the first team here every day.
“I think that those experiences out on loan have helped me maybe more than anything. It gave me a taste of first team football at a really young age and coming up through the levels each time has helped me a lot.”
Wright is the latest youngster to have recently committed their future to the club, following Nathan Patterson and James Maxwell.
With players like Jamie Barjonas and Lewis Mayo now training every day with the first team, Wright says that there is no better time to be a young player at Rangers. He said: “I think that we can really see the pathway now.
“Maybe in the past young players wouldn’t have got a chance, but with the gaffer that we have in now, he’s giving the young boys a better chance than ever before, and everyone is really relishing the challenge.
The youngster is capped at both under-17 and under-19 age groups for Scotland and has also this season been called up to the under-21 squad alongside five fellow Rangers players
He said: “It’s been hard because there are other goalkeepers involved in the set up who are out playing week to week games, but for me it was always about getting my head down and getting working to get my place in the squad.”
He has also travelled with the first team on Europa League trips this season, something that has also aided in his development, “It’s been brilliant, going to all of the different stadiums, being part of the warm up and seeing the atmosphere.
“Being able to see what it’s like in the first team changing room on Europa League night has been incredible.”
