COREY Ngwenya netted his first Under-19s goal on just his second start last night in the side's victory over Kilmarnock, and the defender says he is enjoying the step up in level.

The 16-year-old, who only turned professional earlier this year, has been a mainstay in the Under-17s side and was rewarded with his first Under-19s start against Stirling Albion recently.

He was in from the off once again against Kilmarnock on league duty, and within just a couple of minutes he struck the opening goal.

Speaking to the official Rangers website, the teenager said: “I’m happy with myself. I said before the game that I was scoring, so every opportunity I had to take it.

“It was a bit lucky, but my quick reactions got me the goal.

“We started well and had a good first-half.

"In the second half we gave them a bit of energy off our mistakes, but we finished strongly and came away with the result, which is the most important part.”

On the rise in level between Under-17s and Under-19s, Ngwenya continued: “It’s a lot more challenging physically and mentally.

“You need to be quicker on your feet, and it’s definitely a step up from the Under-17s.

“I’m blessed to have the genetics which have helped with my height.

“The physicality would be more challenging if I wasn’t so tall.

“Myself and the other central defenders are familiar in how to play in that formation, so we’re comfortable in what we’re doing.

“It helps that Conor [Owen] is loud and makes everyone know what they’re doing.”

Corey Ngwenya scores

Corey is the younger brother of Kieran Ngwenya, who currently plays for Rotherham United, having previously enjoyed spells at Aberdeen and Dunfermline Athletic in Scotland.

There is an eight-year age gap between the two, and the younger Ngwenya says his older brother has been a role model throughout his career.

He added: “He has helped me a lot behind the scenes in terms of different aspects of my game and is a big inspiration for me.

“He taught me a lot when I was growing up, and it’s been really helpful to have someone like that to look up to.

“We used to go down the park with his mates. They were always surprised by my physicality even being eight years younger than them, and it was great memories.”
