McInnes: St Mirren Will Be A Tough Test

DEREK MCINNES has warned his Rangers players they will need to be at their best when they face St Mirren as they look to head into the international break with another three Scottish Premiership points.

The Light Blues boss is expecting another entertaining encounter against the Buddies, having already experienced two contrasting matches against them at Ibrox this season - an emphatic 5-1 Premier Sports Cup second-round victory on August 16 and a dramatic 1-0 league win on September 9, when Bojan Miovski scored in the last minute.

McInnes is aware of the attacking threat posed by Craig McLeish’s side, praising their pace, versatility and impressive performances this season as he urged his side to maintain their focus and momentum.

He said: "It is always a tough game. St Mirren are the type of team, this season in particular, where they've got different ways and different threats.

They play with a lot of pace, they try to make the pitch big, and they try to make the game about isolation in the final line.

"They have been a good watch and good value this season, and they've had some big results.

"We've had a couple of games against them. We won 5-1, and the other one we scored in the last minute when it looked as though we weren't going to get a win, so we’ve had two different types of games, and both have been pretty wide open.

"St Mirren are a team who can hurt you, so the game on Saturday needs our full attention. We need to try and get the job done and go into an international break with another three points to keep everything moving along."

McInnes has been pleased with his side’s recent run of results in the league, having recorded seven wins and two draws in their last nine fixtures.

During this period, further victories over Celtic and, most recently, Aberdeen last weekend have booked a place in the Premier Sports Cup final at Barclays Hampden on December 13.

The manager continued: "It's your job to try and give the supporters a team they can believe in and something they can get behind - I think that's clear.

"There's still a load of work ahead of us. Getting to a cup final and hopefully going on and winning it, that just kind of validates a lot of what we're trying to do, but equally, if we don't win that game, questions will be asked.

On a weekly basis, you are having to just keep coming up with wins, and we are pleased with our form.

"I think in the league it's seven wins and two draws, which is good shooting. That would get you close to it if you can replicate that sort of momentum.

"In the cup, we've had three tough games against St Mirren, Celtic and Aberdeen, and we've got a final to look forward to. You've got to take the good from getting to a cup final, and when it comes around we can hopefully be in decent form.

"Obviously, getting into this international break, we want to deal with the game on Saturday but hopefully going into the cup final in good form, we can try and win that although it’s going to be a challenge for us. It's just about trying to send out good messages."

In his pre-match press conference at the Rangers Training Centre today, McInnes provided an injury update ahead of Saturday’s 8pm showdown with the Saints at The Marbill Coaches Stadium.

He added: "Yokota should be back with us by the end of the month and Ross McCrorie will be back at the beginning of next week. Maybe at the start of the international break he'll be doing some training with us.

“I think Cammy and Lawrence are probably both looking to be on the pitch the first week of December, but there is still a bit to do, a few hurdles to overcome.

“I think if everything goes well for them, there is an opportunity maybe to be available for the cup final. We just need to let them be for now and see what it is. But the fact it's a cup final, that won’t do them any harm in terms of pushing them on."
