Waghorn Buzzing To Be Back In Blue

MARTYN WAGHORN can't wait to travel back up to Scotland and join Barry Ferguson's Rangers squad for this weekend's SPFL Tennent's Sixes at Braehead Arena.

The South Shields-born striker signed for the Light Blues in July 2015 – on the same day as Wigan teammate James Tavernier – and in his first season he found the net 28 times in 36 appearances in all competitions, with 20 of his goals helping the club secure the Scottish Championship title and promotion to the Premiership.

Waggy, as he is known, left Rangers in the summer of 2017 and retired from the professional game in February 2025, having played for 12 different senior clubs during his impressive 17-year career, including Sunderland, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, Derby County and Coventry City.

The 36-year-old, who now pulls his boots on for Leicestershire-based Anstey Nomads in the semi-professional Southern League Premier Division Central – the seventh level of the English football pyramid – says it will be a great feeling to represent Rangers at the Tennent’s Sixes tournament.

Explaining how his involvement came about, he revealed: "I spoke to Andy [Halliday] about it and straight away I said that it would be class to play. He then spoke to Baz, and it went from there.

"Baz called me a few days ago, and I'm absolutely buzzing. I played with him in the Masters event at the back end of last year, so when we had a chat about the Tennent's Sixes, I immediately said I would love to be involved.

"It will be great, and I think it will also be very competitive. The players that have been selected in the different teams are a good age, and as soon as you get out on any football pitch, you want to do well and win.

"I'm looking forward to it, and it will be interesting viewing for the fans. I'm sure it will be a great tournament.

"Every time I've had the opportunity to come back up, I've relished it. It's always nice to see the lads and to represent Rangers again.

"After I joined the club, that particular year in 2015/16 is something I'll never forget. Weirdly enough, I was a little bit disappointed because I got injured in the January or February, and then we lost the Scottish Cup final.

"But looking back now, it was an amazing year for me, and just to play for the club and have that bit of success was special. The main goal was getting the club promoted, and we achieved that.

"It could have been a lot better, but it was a great year for me and just to represent Rangers and get the club back to where it should be was brilliant."

Waghorn joined Anstey Nomads in December 2025, and he is enjoying the challenge it brings.

He added: "It's good. The manager and I played together at Leicester a long while ago, and a good mate of mine is the assistant manager at the club as well.

"It kind of suits my schedule - being retired and playing casually when I can. It's a good set of lads, and they are a good team. It's a good level, and we play some nice football.

"I still love playing and having that bit of freedom with your mates and stuff. I just enjoy it when I can."

The SPFL Tennent’s Sixes will take place on October 3 and 4 at Braehead Arena. You can secure your tickets here!
