It was a first Rangers goal for the left-back, who netted the only goal of the game in an important 1-0 victory on the road for Danny Röhl’s men.
There were three changes as James Tavernier, Tochi Chukwuani and Djeidi Gassama came in from the start with Dujon Sterling and Andreas Skov Olsen on the bench, while Mohamed Diomande missed out with a shoulder injury.
Rangers started in Paisley with Jack Butland in goal behind a back four of James Tavernier, Nasser Djiga, Emmanuel Fernandez and Tuur Rommens.
Nico Raskin and Tochi Chukwuani were in midfield, with Djeidi Gassama and Mikey Moore supporting strikers Ryan Naderi and Youssef Chermiti.
It was the home side, led by an interim coaching team following the departure of Stephen Robinson to Aberdeen, that got the action underway.
Rangers started well, and won their third corner of the game inside the first six minutes as Emmanuel Fernandez’s header was deflected over by a St Mirren defender.
Another corner provided a chance at goal as this time Nico Raskin directed the ball towards the target but it was blocked before being gathered.
There was a stop in play after a collision between St Mirren’s Jayden Richardson and Alex Gogic, leaving both with head knocks. Gogic was able to continue, however Richardson had to be replaced by Allan Campbell.
With 31 minutes on the clock, Rangers had the breakthrough they needed, and it was a first goal for January signing Tuur Rommens. Djeidi Gassama gathered the ball in the middle of the pitch, and sent it out wide to Nico Raskin on the right. It was a lovely left-footed delivery from the Belgian, who found his countryman at the back post and Rommens got the crucial touch to send it over the line.
Youssef Chermiti had a chance shortly after as Rommens turned provider with a delivery into the area, but the striker sent his effort just wide of the left-hand post, before at the other end, Killian Phillips found Dan Nlundulu but his header was held comfortably by Jack Butland.
Into the second-half, Nico Raskin sent a header wide from a James Tavernier free-kick, as the midfielder rose well to get a strong connection on the delivery.
As the game approached the hour mark, Danny Röhl turned to his bench for the first time of the afternoon as Andreas Skov Olsen was called into action to replace Djeidi Gassama.
James Tavernier forced a save from Shamal George, as the skipper curled a right-footed strike towards target after finding himself in space on the edge of the box, but the St Mirren goalkeeper did enough to push it behind for a corner.
Another two changes followed for Rangers as Connor Barron made his return from injury to replace Tochi Chukwuani, while Thelo Aasgaard replaced Youssef Chermiti.
Rangers were struggling to create an opening in this second-half, and with just over 10 minutes remaining, the home crowd were getting a lift as they searched for an equaliser.
A final two changes saw the introduction of Jayden Meghoma and Bojan Miovski for Tuur Rommens and Ryan Naderi.
Rangers thought they had the second goal in injury time as Thelo Aasgaard tapped home a ball from Mikey Moore, but it was disallowed after a VAR check.
