In a stop-start first half with the team’s goalless at the break. The skipper stepped up to convert from the penalty spot after the restart before the Brazilian came off the bench to add a second in stoppage time with the winger’s expert from outside the area securing the points and subsequently seeing Rangers claim an eighth win in a row.

The Head Coach made four alterations to his side from their midweek European clash as he looked to install freshness once again. There was a first start for recent new arrival Tochi Chuwuani in midfield as well as a Rangers debut for Andreas Skov Olsen, whilst captain James Tavernier and Bojan Miovski also came into the lineup.

Röhl’s men were seeking an eighth win on the spin in all competitions, but knew they were facing a different Dundee side to whom they beat in their last meeting 3-0 in November. After a technical delay involving VAR there was a delay to kick off at Ibrox, before the Gers settled into early possession inside the opening exchanges.

The skipper, who was back in the lineup from the Ludogorets game, looked to create the first moment of purpose for the hosts after seven minutes. Combining with new arrival Andreas Skov Olsen initially, he took matters into his own hands by driving forward riding several challenges. He combined with Thelo Aasgaard and made his way into the area, but was crowded out before Bojan Miovski found himself in an offside position in the next phase of play.

Rangers two recent arrivals for a split second thought they had combined to good affect to opening the scoring only to be denied by the assistant’s flag for offside. Following a short corner between Tavernier and Skov Olsen, the latter sent a dangerous delivery round the back which was met by the header of Tochi Chukwuani who finished beyond Jon McCracken having just gone a second too early.

Dundee had their first effort shortly after the restart after a break for the goal check. A clipped ball into the feet of Ashley Hay saw the forward lay it off to the arriving Callum Jones on the half volley, but his shot was straight down the throat of Jack Butland to gather.

There was stop-start feeling to proceedings as Rangers couldn’t quite get into their rhythm in the opening quarter of the game. Mikey Moore was looking lively down the left flank having begun operating on the opposite side to Thursday evening, but the hosts weren’t able to find the killer pass to break the Dundee resistance early on.

The Light Blues were almost the beneficiary of yet another set piece after a Skov Olsen delivery from the right side. The Dane’s cross broke for Moore on the edge of the area but the youngster’s effort into the ground bounced wide of the target.

It was a frustrating opening half-hour for the Ibrox faithful. The away side had a series of throw-ins deep in the Gers’ half which they looked to make count by launching it into the area, one fell for Jones on the deck, but his effort scooped over Butland’s crossbar.

Aasgaard looked to spark the hosts into life as the volume ramped up in Govan. After a turnover in possession inside the Dundee half, the Norwegian international had space to carry the ball forward, he opted to shoot from outside the penalty area, but McCracken was level to it as he pushed the ball away from danger.

The midfielder then almost turned provider for the advancing Chukwuani. After some patient build-up involving Nasser Djiga and Raskin, the Belgian helped it onto Aasgaard who acknowledged his teammate well placed to his left, but his low left footed effort was kept out by the feet of McCracken.

An acrobatic Emmanuel Fernandez effort almost brought the hosts joy prior to the interval. Captain Tavernier’s delivery from deep after a free kick was brought down well by the fellow Englishman inside the box, but his overhead kick flew wide of the left hand post as the teams went in at the break locked level.

Straight out the blocks, the Gers had the chance to get off to the best possible second half start. Lively down the right, Skov Olsen played it wide to Aasgaard to his right, he fired it in low which was flicked by Miovski, it fell for Raskin who fired over from close range, but Ryan Astley was coming in and caught the Belgian with a late challenge as the referee pointed to the spot.

Captain Tavernier stepped up and dispatched his 100th league goal with to the keeper’s right, with McCracken getting a touch but unable to keep it out, with the Gers finding a way through minutes after the restart.

Röhl turned to his bench to introduce Mohamed Diomande and Djeidi Gassama as they replaced the two new signings. The hosts looked threatening when breaking into the final third, particularly through Aasgaard in picking up dangerous areas in the number 10 position, as they went in search of a second to give them breathing space.

The theme of large chunks of the game with various stoppages continued throughout the second half as Rangers were keen to pull further ahead. Fernandez made strides forward from defence and laid it to Raskin 25-yards from goal. He tried his luck but McCracken was well aware of his surroundings to see the effort wide.

The clock ticked past the final quarter-hour remaining with Tavernier’s spot kick remaining the difference between the sides. The Light Blues patiently probed on occasion for goal that would out the game beyond the visitors. Substitute Diomande was on hand to try his luck on the left side of the box, but his effort flew past the near post.

That second almost arrived minutes later as Moore was denied from close range. Working the ball inside the box the Spurs loanee received the ball from Miovski inside the box, but his shot with the outside of his right foot was turned from the post by McCracken.

As the game entered stoppage time and the hosts looking to see out the contest. A mistake in the Dundee backline was punished by Danilo. The Gers won the ball in the final third with the striker in one on one as he cooly dispatched beyond McCracken.

There was still time before the end for Gassama to curl in an expert finish from outside the box to claim another vital three points and eighth win in a row for the Light Blues in all competitions.
