In what could have been a potential banana skin for the Gers in driving rain and gusts of 40 miles per hour in the north-east, the visitors turned in a commanding display and found the route to goal through Thelo Aasgaard and a James Tavernier spot-kick either side of the half-time interval.
Danny Röhl named just the solitary change to his lineup from Tuesday evening’s success at Ibrox, with the injured Connor Barron dropping out in place of Aasgaard.
Conditions in Aberdeen certainly weren’t conducive to pretty football as the Gers sought to continue their positive momentum at what has traditionally been a tough away venue.
However, they were immediately on the front foot when the away side stole possession midway inside the Aberdeen half and careered forward through Aasgaard and Djeidi Gassama before Mohamed Diomande’s half-volley forced Dimitar Mitov into a save at full-stretch.
Manny Fernandez, who has developed into a real thorn in the opposition from set-pieces, then nodded wide from close-range before Youseff Chermiti trapped a direct goal kick from Jack Butland and volleyed wide on the half-turn.
Aberdeen’s attacking threat had been minimal in the opening exchanges, but Leighton Clarkson tested Butland down low with a rasping effort through a crowd of bodies from 25 yards out that momentarily woke the home crowd.
They were quickly left counting the cost of an early concession, however, when Rangers took the lead on 23 minutes. It was another perfectly crafted set-piece that proved fruitful for the Gers when Jayden Meghoma combined with James Tavernier from a short corner and delivered into the vicinity of Aasgaard who peeled off his marker and cushioned a delightful side-foot volley beyond Mitov.
Four minutes later, Rangers thought they had doubled their advantage from another dead ball situation.
Attacking directly into the wind, Tavernier’s floated free-kick delivery from just inside the Aberdeen half sailed all the way through to Fernandez who rose above Mitov and nodded home from 15 yards out.
However, the Gers celebrations were short-lived as referee David Dickinson was advised to take a trip to the pitchside monitor where he adjudged the English defender to have impeded the Aberdeen goalkeeper in the process of scoring.
It was unfortunate for the visitors who had truly overpowered Aberdeen in the opening half hour and only lacked the comfort of a second goal.
Such is the rate at which the Gers are converting set-piece opportunities that the away support roared with excitement when Aasgaard won his side a corner on the stroke of half-time, although Diomande shot over from the subsequent delivery after Aberdeen cleared only as far as the Ivorian on the edge of the penalty area.
The second half began with Röhl’s side in the ascendancy as a delightfully clipped free-kick delivery from Tavernier was met in space by Nico Raskin, but the Belgian was guilty to getting underneath the ball as he headed wide.
Peter Levein had already turned to his substitutes bench on two occasions as the hosts sought an avenue back into the match, with Rangers keen to maintain the control they had in the contest.
As the hour mark approach the game became slightly fragmented, interspersed with cheap fouls from either side in the driving rain.
Rangers could have doubled their advantage five minutes later when Moore slalomed through the heart of the Aberdeen midfield, biding his time to feed Chermiti who peeled into space, but the forward was denied by the legs of a sprawling Mitov as he looked to curl into the far corner.
The hosts’ goalkeeper appeared on a one-mission mission to deny Rangers the second goal they merited as, just moments later, Moore skipped inside and was this time denied by the feet of Mitov.
They weren’t to be denied with 18 minutes remaining as the left-hand side was once again the avenue, this time via the tricky feet of Gassama, who knocked the ball through the legs of Nicky Devlin and was brought down by a trailing leg from Graeme Shinnie.
It was a clear-cut penalty and the away side made no mistake from 12 yards as Tavernier strode forward and fired into the bottom corner to double his side’s advantage.
With the comfort of a second Rangers saw out the victory - Rabbi Matondo making his return to action in injury time - as the Gers faithful who made the long trip north serenaded the players in appreciation of a priceless three points.
