Two goals inside two first-half minutes put the Belgian side into a commanding position, but second half strikes from Mohamed Diomande and Findlay Curtis - with one of the last actions of the contest - hauled the Gers back on level terms.

Martin’s first team selection as Gers boss included debutant Max Aarons in defence, while there were also starts for Kieran Dowell, who enjoyed a productive loan spell with Birmingham City last term, and 19-year-old Academy graduate Curtis.

One of the Head Coach’s promises since his appointment would be that his side would run until they no longer could, and it was abundantly clear inside the opening exchanges that Rangers were keen to defend inside Club Brugge’s half.

Indeed, it wouldn’t be summer in Glasgow without a drizzling of rain, slickening the Ibrox surface and making the ball zip across the pitch with greater purpose.

The Gers boss admitted in his pre-match media activity that his players were set to play under significant fatigue after a heavy training load this week, with the side still very early into their pre-season preparations and scheduled to depart for an intensive training camp at St. George’s Park on Tuesday.

Oscar Cortes’ endeavour was underlined inside seven minutes when he stole possession down by the near-side corner flag, but his subsequent delivery into the penalty area was too heavy in search of Danilo.

But it was a flowing move from the Belgian visitors which broke the deadlock moments later; the ball falling kindly to Hugo Vetlesen inside the penalty area who dispatched beyond Liam Kelly after a smart stop initially from the Gers goalkeeper.

The away side certainly didn’t lack in attacking quality and, a little over 60 seconds later, they doubled their advantage when Ludovit Reis connected ever so sweetly with a first-time volley from the edge of the penalty area that whistled into the top corner.

It was, in many ways, testament to the quality of the strike that a smattering of applause rung round Ibrox in appreciation.

It took the hosts until beyond the midway point of the first half to fashion their first shot in anger as Nico Raskin swept Curtis’ clever cut-back goalwards but straight down the throat of Simon Mignolet at his near post.

The half-time interval prompted five changes from Martin as he looked to share the minutes around his squad at this early stage in their season preparations.

Almost immediately a neat move involving Curtis and substitute Nedim Bajrami created a shooting opportunity for Danilo, but the away side had enough bodies back to limit the danger to only a corner.

And it was another one of the substitutes who reduced the arrears in the contest. A loose pass midway inside the Club Brugge half was pounced upon by Cortes who immediately released Diomande into space and the Ivorian curled a delicious finish into the far corner.

For a test so early into pre-season this was certainly of the beneficial variety for the Gers, who were controlling proceedings to open the second 45 minutes.

A patient move down the right-hand side almost engineered an equaliser just shy of the hour-mark as Bajrami freed Aarons in space inside the penalty area but the full-back contrived only to steer his left-footed strike wide of the target.

Danilo tested his luck moments later which drew a diving save from Nordin Jackers between the posts, before a further five changes from the hosts included a pair of Academy players in full-back Zander Hutton and forward Josh Gentles.

The Club Brugge goal was once again under threat when Diomande unleashed from distance, before Gentles was almost released in-behind but the 17-year-old couldn’t quite work out the ball from under his feet inside the penalty area.

But with one of the last actions of the game it was Rangers who struck the final blow as Bajrami surged forward and teed up Curtis who stroked home confidently to ensure a share of the spoils in Govan.
