Cyriel Dessers and Nico Raskin were on target for the Light Blues at Easter Road in the final match of the 2024/25 campaign.
There were two changes from the midweek victory over Dundee United as Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Danilo came in for the injured Jefte and Hamza Igamane.
Rangers started with Jack Butland in goal behind a back four of James Tavernier, John Souttar, Leon Balogun and Neraysho Kasanwirjo. The midfield three remained unchanged with Nico Raskin, Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande lining up there, while Cyriel Dessers was joined in attack by Danilo and Vaclav Cerny.
With victories this week over Aberdeen and Dundee United, Ferguson was hoping his side could end the season on a high with a positive display in the capital.
It was a fantastic start for Rangers as Dessers, who hit his 50th goal for the club on Wednesday night, wasted no time in adding to that tally with an opening goal after just two minutes of the match. A goal kick from Hibernian keeper Jordan Smith only made it out as far as Nico Raskin, who got a good header on the ball to send it back towards the goal and into the path of Dessers in the centre of the box.
The Rangers striker took a good touch to chest down the effort and set-up a right-footed shot which he sent into the back of the net for his 29th goal of the season.
With less than 10 minutes played, there was a pause for Leon Balogun to receive treatment. He was unable to continue with what looked like a knee issue and was replaced by Robin Propper.
Junior Hoilett had a chance for Hibs as they looked to respond, but it was comfortable for Butland who held the shot. It was an open start to this final match of the season, and it should’ve been 2-0 to Rangers shortly after. From a Hibs free-kick, the visitors broke-up the pitch with Danilo and Cerny combining well as the latter raced through one-one-one with goalkeeper Jordan Smith.
Cerny attempted to curl a low strike around the goalkeeper, but he was able to block the strike.
A moment of controversy followed as Rangers appeared to have their second goal in this match. Diomande picked-out Nico Raskin with a ball forward and he got enough on it to send it under keeper Jordan Smith.
Rocky Bushiri was tracking back in an attempt to clear the ball from the line, with it looking to have crossed the line before the clearance. Hibs then broke up the pitch, and scored an equaliser at the other end as Kieron Bowie got on the end of a cut-back to send it beyond Butland. A VAR check followed on the goal, and after a break in play, referee Nick Walsh awarded Hibs their equaliser.
James Tavernier had a free-kick pushed wide by Smith as Rangers looked to restore their lead, before Cerny tested the keeper with a right-footed effort from inside the area.
With the teams level at the break, it wasn’t long into the second-half before Ferguson’s men were able to edge in front once again. A corner was whipped into the box by James Tavernier, and Nico Raskin was on hand at the front post to guide a header into the back of the net.
Ferguson turned to his bench with 52 minutes played as Tom Lawrence was introduced in place of Mohamed Diomande.
There was a fantastic save from Jordan Smith to deny Danilo as the game passed the hour mark. Cerny and Kasanwirjo combined down the left, with the full-back driving forward before sending a lovely ball into Danilo in the box. The Brazilian directed a powerful hit towards goal, but Smith managed to do enough to block it.
It was Hibs who found the next goal with 66 minutes played in Edinburgh. A cross from Nicky Cadden met the head of Martin Boyle made no mistake in guiding it beyond Butland.
There was a double change for Rangers as Oscar Cortes and Bailey Rice replaced Vaclav Cerny and Nico Raskin.
Smith pulled off another fantastic save as he got a strong hand to deny Danilo in the final minute of the match. At the other end Martin Boyle had an opportunity through on goal, but a heavy touch allowed Butland in to collect and see the game end level.
