Cyriel Dessers and Nico Raskin were on target for Barry Ferguson’s men, but twice St Mirren were able to find the equaliser to see the game end level in Paisley.
There were four changes from the last outing 10 days ago in the UEFA Europa League as Robin Propper, Clinton Nsiala, Bailey Rice and Hamza Igamane came into the starting XI.
Rangers started with Liam Kelly in goal behind James Tavernier, Robin Propper, John Souttar, Clinton Nsiala and Jefte. Bailey Rice came back into midfield alongside Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande while Hamza Igamane also returned to the starting XI this afternoon alongside Cyriel Dessers.
It was Dessers who had the first opportunity of the match inside the opening five minutes as he tested Hemming in the St Mirren goal with a powerful hit towards his near post, but it was pushed wide by the goalkeeper. At the other end, Liam Kelly got a hand to a looping ball across goal from Killian Phillips to scoop his cross away from goal and clear the danger.
With 13 minutes on the clock, another chance fell the way of Dessers as he was played in by a lovely ball from Diomande, but the striker was unable to keep his strike down as it drifted over the bar.
Nico Raskin saw a strike from distance go wide, before St Mirren had a fantastic opportunity for the opening goal as Mikael Mandron latched onto a loose ball from Liam Kelly but the forward would’ve been disappointed as he sent the ball high over the bar.
With 42 minutes played Rangers had the breakthrough and it was Dessers who found the target with a neat finish. Nico Raskin spotted the striker in the box and he showed strength to hold off a St Mirren defender before turning and sending a composed strike low into the bottom corner for his 24th goal of the season.
However, the lead didn’t last long, as the home side found an equaliser just two minutes later. A long throw-in from Killian Phillips caused problems for the Rangers defence and the ball dropped for captain Mark O’Hara who was in space inside the box and drilled a strike beyond Kelly.
Rangers restored their lead less than 10 minutes into the second-half as Nico Raskin found the back of the net with a low finish. Fellow midfielder Mohamed Diomande provided the assist as Rangers drove through the heart of the St Mirren defence, with Raskin picking up the ball in a central area and in space he finished a left-footed strike into the back of the net.
Liam Kelly pulled off a fantastic save with his foot to deny St Mirren substitute Roland Idowu a goal after Gogic nicked the ball from John Souttar inside the box.
St Mirren once again found an equalising goal in this match as substitute Conor McMenamin tapped home a ball across the face of goal. There was a lengthy VAR check for offside following the goal, but he was confirmed as onside, and the home team were back level.
Ferguson turned to his bench for the first time this afternoon as Vaclav Cerny was introduced to replace Cyriel Dessers.
Further changes followed as the head coach looked for a winning goal in this match. Connor Barron and Nedim Bajrami were introduced in place of Bailey Rice and Clinton Nsiala.
With six minutes added on, Rangers still searched for that winner, with St Mirren having a chance of their own at the death, through Roland Idowu but it was wide of the target and the match finished 2-2.
