There were five different goalscorers at Ibrox as James Tavernier, Danilo, Hamza Igamane, Vaclav Cerny and a double from Cyriel Dessers saw Rangers to victory.
From Sunday’s 1-0 win over St Johnstone, there were three changes to the starting line-up as Leon Balogun, Mohamed Diomande and Danilo all came in, with Robin Propper, Connor Barron and Nedim Bajrami on the bench.
Rangers started with Jack Butland in goal behind a back four of James Tavernier, John Souttar, Leon Balogun and Jefte.
Nico Raskin was joined by Mohamed Diomande and Ianis Hagi in midfield, while in attack Danilo came in for his first start since August, and was joined by Hamza Igamane and Vaclav Cerny.
It was a positive start from Rangers at Ibrox in an attacking line-up as they caused early problems for the visitors early. With five minutes on the clock, Hamza Igamane came agonisingly close to an opening as Cerny found him with a cut-back but it was just inches wide of Robby McCrorie’s left-hand post.
Seconds later the Moroccan came close again as neat footwork saw him see off two Kilmarnock bodies to open up space for a shot which he curled just over the bar.
From a corner, another opportunity opened up for Rangers as James Tavernier’s delivery was headed by Igamane and fell for John Souttar at the back post but it was just behind the Rangers defender as it came off the back of his foot and landed over the bar.
A Daniel Armstrong corner saw Kilmarnock have an opportunity as Joe Wright sent the ball towards goal, but John Souttar was on hand to turn it behind.
There was a lengthy stop in play, midway through the first-half as Nico Raskin received treatment after a head knock but the midfielder was able to return, sporting a bandage.
Souttar was again on hand to block Marley Watkins as he was sent through on goal by Armstrong as both sides continued to search for the breakthrough.
It did come with 37 minutes played at Ibrox and it was captain James Tavernier who came up with the crucial goal. A throw-in was taken by Hamza Igamane to Ianis Hagi. With acres of space, the Romanian sent a perfect cross into the area and Tavernier was there at the back post to send it beyond McCrorie.
Rangers almost instantly launched another attack in a quick move with the ball landing out at Cerny on the left. The winger picked out Igamane in the box and he flicked it towards goal but it was just wide from the striker.
McCrorie pulled off a good save late in the first half as Danilo got a strong header on a Nico Raskin cross, but the ex-Rangers goalkeeper matched the effort to deny Rangers a second after a positive first-half from Clement’s men.
Rangers started the second-half the way they ended the first, on the front foot and looking for that all important second goal. Danilo was denied by McCrorie again as the Kilmarnock goalkeeper pulled off a fantastic save.
But it wasn’t long until the second goal did come and it was the Brazilian who found the target with his first goal since August. Ianis Hagi provided his second assist of the evening as he picked out Danilo in the box and the striker coolly slotted beyond the goalkeeper to double the advantage with 53 minutes played.
Rangers didn’t stop there though, and just two minutes later found themselves three goals ahead. Corrie Ndaba lost the ball in a dangerous area, with Hamza Igamane picking up on the edge of the box. It was a fantastic hit from the 22-year-old as he found the bottom corner for his first league goal for Rangers.
It was an incredible first 15 minutes of the second-half for Clement’s men, who were 4-0 ahead with 61 minutes played. Nico Raskin weaved his way into the box and layed it off to Vaclav Cerny who guided a low shot beyond McCrorie.
Tavernier had a strike saved, before Hagi saw a free-kick pushed away by McCrorie as Rangers continued to pile the pressure on Kilmarnock.
Clement turned to his bench for the final 25 minutes, with Cyriel Dessers, Nedim Bajrami and Kieran Dowell coming on to replace Hamza Igamane, Danilo and Vaclav Cerny.
With 69 minutes played, Rangers extended their lead even further at Ibrox. Bajrami and Jefte combined down the left, with the latter sending the ball across the face of goal and Dessers was on hand to tap home the fifth goal of the evening. The linesman raised his flag for offside but after a VAR check the goal was given.
Ridvan and Connor Barron were introduced for the final 15 minutes at Ibrox as they replaced Jefte and Nico Raskin.
The goals were not stopping for Clement’s men, and on 77 minutes Rangers were six goals ahead with a fantastic move. Kieran Dowell and James Tavernier combined with Tavernier released down the right. The captain then picked the perfect cross to Dessers who was in a central position in the box, and he guided a composed finish into the back of the net.
