The Light Blues were left with it all to do when the home side opened up a two-goal advantage in the first half through Daizen Maeda and Kyogo.
Despite an improved showing in the second half, a deflected strike from Callum McGregor put to rest any hopes of a Gers comeback.
Philippe Clement’s side lined up with two changes to the side which dismissed Ross County to the tune of six goals last time out, with Mohamed Diomande replacing Tom Lawrence and Robin Propper ruled fit enough to re-join the backline.
Rangers began on the front foot and ought to have been ahead inside six minutes when a dangerous delivery from James Tavernier was met by Rabbi Matondo at close range but, under pressure from a Celtic defender, the Welshman contrived to nod wide.
It was a culmination of a bright spell from Clement’s side who had earlier worried the home side’s defence when Cyriel Dessers took a slide rule pass from Tavernier into his stride and worked the space for an opening.
His effort, however, was straight down the throat of Kasper Schmeichel, although the linesman had raised his flag in the meantime.
Rangers were served a warning side shortly after when Celtic broke through the defensive pressure of the away side and, one square pass from Nicolas Kuhn to Kyogo later, the ball was in the back of Jack Butland’s net.
The Light Blues were offered a reprieve by VAR when it was adjudged that Kuhn had strayed offside in the build-up, yet it wasn’t long until the home side broke the deadlock.
Only six minutes later and a move which bore resemblance to the offside strike caught Rangers on the backfoot, allowing Alistair Johnston to dig out a cross from the byline and Daizen Maeda stroked home from close range.
The goal seemed to change the flow of the game, and the momentum was firmly with Celtic as the first half wore on.
Kyogo blazed over on 36 minutes after Maeda was denied a second – identical – goal of the opening period.
However, the home side stretched their advantage further five minutes before the interval when Kyogo let fly from 25 yards out with a strike which nestled into the bottom corner.
The Gers were first to threaten after the interval, almost immediately catching the home side napping when Ross McCausland pinched possession from Paulo Bernardo and fed Dessers. However, the forward’s effort was tame and comfortable collected by Schmeichel.
John Souttar then had an effort blocked from a Vaclav Cerny cross as Rangers sought an avenue back into the contest.
The scoreline was very nearly put beyond the away side when Jefte was robbed in midfield and Kyogo sprung the offside trap, but there was no harm to Butland’s goal when the Japanese forward chipped his finish into the side netting.
Another dangerous Jefte delivery almost engineered a route back into the game for Clement’s side, but both Cerny and McCausland appeared to get in each other’s way as the opportunity fizzled out to no avail.
However, there was no way back into the encounter for Rangers with a quarter of an hour remaining when Callum McGregor’s deflected effort from distance flew beyond the reach of Butland.
