Both sides hit the woodwork in the 90 minutes, but no one was able to find a breakthrough as they shared the points in Edinburgh
Summer signing Connor Barron came in from the start for his debut, with other new arrivals Liam Kelly, Vaclav Cerny and Jefte on the bench. Rangers started with Jack Butland in goal and a back four of James Tavernier, John Souttar, Ben Davies and Ridvan. Barron was joined in midfield by Mohamed Diomande and Tom Lawrence, while Cyriel Dessers led the line with support from Scott Wright and Oscar Cortes.
It was the home side who got the action underway at a noisy Tynecastle as the match kicked-off the start of the new season.
Hearts had the first chance in the opening two minutes as Yan Dhanda chested the ball into the path of Lawrence Shankland but his powerful strike was straight at Butland and the Rangers number one gathered comfortably. The hosts had started lively and carved another opening inside the first 10 minutes as they made ground down the left, with Vargas finding Penrice in a good position but his strike was tipped wide by Butland at the near post.
Shankland had another strike deflected wide, before, from the resulting corner Dhanda’s long-range effort from the edge of the box bounced back off the bar as Naismith’s men continued to threaten.
Connor Barron was the first to test Clark in the Hearts goal with 19 minutes played in Edinburgh. It was a good strike from the 21-year-old who released a low drilled left-footed strike towards goal but the Hearts goalkeeper did well to get down and get a hand on the strike to send it wide.
Cyriel Dessers had a shot just over, before Barrie McKay curled one high of the bar at the other end as both sides continued to search for the breakthrough.
Rangers had a great chance with five minutes of the first-half remaining as Tavernier found Ridvan in the middle of the pitch. The full-back drove forward before picking out Dessers with a lovely cross and it was a good strike from the Nigerian but Clark managed to block the shot.
There was nothing to separate the sides at the break, as referee Nick Walsh signalled the end of the first-half.
Early in the second, Rangers were forced into a change as Oscar Cortes went down on the far side and was unable to continue with Rabbi Matondo coming on in his place. Clement’s men came agonisingly close to a breakthrough as Cyriel Dessers was denied by the woodwork as his header came back off the crossbar.
The Rangers boss turned to his bench with an hour played as recent signing Vaclav Cerny was introduced for his debut in place of Scott Wright, while Leon Balogun replaced Ben Davies.
Tom Lawrence was denied by Clark seconds later as he got on the end of a James Tavernier free-kick to send a superb right-footed volley towards the top corner, but the Hearts goalkeeper matched the effort with a fine save.
Both teams were creating some great chances, and Lawrence Shankland forced Butland into a good save at his near post as he fired a strike from a tight-angle towards goal but the goalkeeper did well to keep out the shot.
For the final period, Kieran Dowell was introduced in place of Connor Barron in midfield with 7 minutes remaining. Shankland sent a header wide in injury time, but neither side could find a breakthrough as the game ended goalless.
