A first-half strike from Fashion Jr was followed by a James Tavernier penalty before a late Jean-Luc Dompe free-kick got Hamburg a goal in the final minute. 

With a relationship between the Rangers and Hamburg dating back to the 1970’s, there was a good atmosphere inside Ibrox as the Bundesliga 2 side received a warm welcome to Glasgow.

The Rangers squad was bolstered by the return of Kemar Roofe and Tom Lawrence, while summer signing Cyriel Dessers was also named in the matchday squad for the first time.

Jack Butland started in goal for Rangers with a back four of James Tavernier, Ben Davies, Leon Balogun and Ridvan Yilmaz. 

Nico Raskin, Kieran Dowell and Ianis Hagi were in midfield, with Fashion Jr, Rabbi Matondo and Abdallah Sima completing the XI for Rangers. 

It was Sima who got the match underway at Ibrox, as Gers continued their pre-season preparations in front of a home crowd. Rabbi Matondo was first to test the visiting goalkeeper, Daniel Fernandes, inside the opening five minutes as he latched on the end of a ball from captain James Tavernier to drill an effort towards goal but it was blocked by the Hamburg number one. 

In a lovely attacking move from Rangers, Kieran Dowell picked out the run of Ridvan with ball from midfield. The full-back delivered an inviting cross into the box in search of Ianis Hagi but the Romanian was unable to keep his shot on target as it flashed inches wide of Fernandes’ left-hand post. 

Hamburg had a chance to open the scoring shortly after as Robert Glatzel picked out Ransford Konigsdorffer as he drove into the box but his shot failed to trouble Jack Butland as it hit the side netting. 

Michael Beale’s side almost had an opener with 22 minutes on the clock with a well-worked move which started from Butland. Nico Raskin picked out James Tavernier on space on the rigfht and he drove forward before finding Abdallah Sima ahead of him.

Sima crossed the ball into the box with a Hamburg clearance landing for Kieran Dowell on the edge of the box but his low and powerful strike was pushed away by Fernandes, before Ianis Hagi’s curling effort on the rebound was just over the bar. 

With half an hour played at Ibrox, Fashion Jr was next to have a chance at goal as he cut inside from the left to get a right-footed shot away from the edge of the box. It was pushed clear by Fernandes with Sima striking just over on the rebound. 

A free-kick provided an opportunity for Immanuel Pherai to try a shot at goal for the visitors as he looked to curl the ball beyond Jack Butland but it was just wide from the Hamburg man.

Rangers were ahead before the break through Fashion Jr as he was alert to a mistake at the back from the German side. An attempted ball back to the goalkeeper was intercepted by the forward who showed strength and determination to see off Ludovit Reis before sending the ball low into the back of the net to give Michael Beale’s men the lead in this friendly. 

Gers were awarded a penalty just a few minutes before the break as Fashion Jr was taken down on the edge of the box by Guilherme Ramos with referee Kevin Clancy pointing to the spot. 

James Tavernier stepped-up to take the penalty and found the bottom corner with a low right-footed shot which nestled in the bottom corner to double Rangers’ lead before half-time. 

At the break, Beale made five changes to his side with Leon Balogun, Ben Davies, Kieran Dowell, Ianis Hagi and Fashion Jr all coming off and being replaced by John Souttar, Johnly Yfeko, John Lundstram, Todd Cantwell and Sam Lammers. 

From a corner, Rangers almost had a third as Tavernier played a one-two with Todd Cantwell before delivering the ball into the box. Sam Lammers got his head to the ball which sent it into the path of Abdallah Sima but his close-range shot was just over the bar. 

Four more changes for Gers just after the hour mark saw Cyriel Dessers on for his first Rangers appearance alongside Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe and Bailey Rice. 

Jack Butland pulled off a good save to deny Laszlo Benes a goal for Hamburg as he got a strong hand to push wide the strike. 

In another attacking move from Rangers, James Tavernier had a shot blocked by the goalkeeper, before Todd Cantwell’s header came off the bar and Dessers effort was saved by the Hamburg goalkeeper. 

Tom Lawrence made his return from injury with just over 10 minutes of the match remaining in his first appearance since August last year as he replaced captain James Tavernier. 

Lawrence almost set-up Sam Lammers late in the game as he found the Dutch forward in the box but his strike was just wide of the target.  

Hamburg had a goal in added time as Jean-Luc Dompe curled a free-kick from the edge of the box into the back of the net.

Next up for Rangers is Olympiacos at Ibrox on Wednesday evening.
